India succesfully test fires `Astra' missile

This is air to air missile.More tests to follow. The maiden test has become a success.

Will it lead to a missile race in the region?

The news is given below:-

India successfully test fired the Astra air-to-air missile from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) of Chandipur-on-sea off the Orissa coast on Saturday.

"Astra is a beyond visual range air-to-air missile. The test was a success,” S P Das, Director of the ITR, said.
“There may be some more tests in the next couple of days,” he added.

The state-run Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) has already completed the control flights of ‘Astra,’ designed for an 80-km range in head-on mode and 20 km-range in tail-chase mode.
The beyond visual range missile has been integrated with the carrier aircraft Sukhoi-30 MKI and might be integrated with other fighter jets (Mirage 2000 and MiG 29) once all tests are done to verify its accuracy in destroying manoeuvring targets.

The Hyderabad-based Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL) took nearly five years to develop the 150-kg tactical missile at an estimated cost of Rs10 billion under the integrated guided missile development programme of the DRDO. Possessing such a futuristic weapon will propel India into an elite club of countries such as the US, Russia, France and Israel.

this astra missile is a donation from usa.

this is something where we are lagging considerably and where future lies.

its high time pakistani defence industry should work on these air to air missile platform with Beyond visual range capabilities otherwise any one can bang us being at 60000+ ceiling based on our current capability.

pakistan is already working with China on BVR missile "SD-10" which has a range of 70+km and it is said to be superior to american Aim-120A amraam.. india does not have 100% technology to make their own 100% indigenous air to air BVR missiles.. their is not a single project in their defence history where they have constructed it indigenously..

Arjunk----> downgraded variant of Leopard II designed by Krauss-Maffei of Germany
Dhruv-----> Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm / Eurocopter (Germany) apparently designed BK-117 and Dhruv and the armed version of Dhruv and LCH uses....

Re: India succesfully test fires `Astra’ missile

Mahindra tractors of india are quite popular in USA.

Mahindra Tractor - Compact tractors, utility tractors, farm tractors, ag tractors, attachments, implements & farm equipment - all built tough!

^ which company's TOT is this??

btw.. pakistan exports its indigenous UAVs to US for border security and also to many countries.. in one export field pakistan is ahead of india.! azerbijian and sudan have already placed their orders with pakistan for jf-17s...

It’s USA operations of Indian car, truck and tractor manufacturer: Mahindra & Mahindra.

as for military capablities: All Sukhois and T-90 tanks for India are being made in India. India always ensures technology transfer agreements before signing any big military agreements. Indian military exports are much higher than pakistans.

good to hear that...
frankly this is only field where our defence forces lack.
you got to have a reliable air cover to carry out operations.
