India shocked by cricket defeat

Hundreds of millions of Indians watched in shock as their team plunged to defeat in the first Cricket World Cup of the millennium on Sunday evening.

read some of these responses and impressions. :hehe:

Most Indians fans were shocked.

“I still cannot believe it, as I had thought that India was the only team which would stop the dream run of the Aussies in the World Cup,” said Delhi housewife, Reshma.

**Prayers unanswered **“We knew India would lose after Australia put up such an imposing total,” added Rajeev.

Prayers were made to the weather gods when overcast conditions threatened the match for a while. But even that prayer went unanswered. :hehe: “We clapped when we saw in television that rain had started pouring and covers were on but unfortunately it did not last long,” said Sunil, a betelnut shop owner in Delhi.

For many the excitement turned to anger

Thats pathetic. I mean atleast they came all the way to the final. Indian public should know they are not the best team in the world. Had India won it would definatley have been an upset. Aussies came into the cup hot favourites and they showed yet again why they are regarded the best. I think India did their best and its a huge achievement they came in the final ahead of team like South Afrioca, Srilanka, Pakistan, England & West Indies.

when will the public in the sub-continent realise that the team can’t always win they aren’t immortal india or pakistan, our spectators are always expecting too much, chandadas leads india to the final of a world cup for crying out loud’ this is the pinnacle of the cricketers careers, the best prize in the sport, india did as well they could and still crowd trouble is practisied on the streets of india,…

how bloddy pathetic. .:nono1: :nook: :mad2:

one minute guli is praised and the next his pic on a plac-card or his effigy or other players’ effigies are burnt this is dispicable and so annoying to witness/see.

not on…

if they won, they could have gotton $800,000 shared for winning the final (not even that) 'Seven star' deluxe apartment flats near Bombay worth $5m and Free car for each player. not anymore...

The most fun part was when the ilaz started clapping when the rain came down thinking the match would start over hehe

Silly People They didn't knew that AUSSIES are gonna win the tournament... Now its pakistans turn to make fun of india as they did in 1999:p..

They should be proud of their team.. reaching the final after 20 years and yet they are still angry.

who 's angry :rotato: LOL public reaction is that best team won ! thats it . And this was atleast a match  not a mismatch like 99 final :hehe:

:rotfl: :rotfl:

If loosing by 125 runs is not a mismatch than I dont know what qualifies as a mismatch for you. Agreed Australia outclassed Pakistan in a one sided final in '99 but this was no different. India was never in a position to hope for victory. This was a very one sided final too.

Dude, India ver chasing 360 and they maintained 6 per over till the final over and yeah sure India was never in a position to win , but only after veeru got out. Remember India has the record of chasing the 300+ scores most of the time
thats my official reply corroborated with fatcs :snooty:

PS: I too didn’t expect at any time that India could win, after sachin got out  my personal opinion

I am an Indian and I know better abt me and my country ppl. U can report from outside , not read the emotions

period

Match ? That ended in just 40 overs. (may be earlier… )
I got to watch this “match” from around the 40 overs, of the first inning and unfortunate I could not see a “match”. It seemed they had already given up. They just wanted to get over with the remaining overs. The Indian players were going through the motions. Never have I seen such hopelessness, helplessness and despair on the face of the players. No one was positive and no one was encouraging the bowlers. Had the Indians fought hard in the last 10 overs and given 60 or maybe less (instead of over 100)runs there was a chance but …

Last overs bowled by the Indians were not to get Aussie wickets, neither to restrict the Aussie to a total that Indians could achieve. The bowlers were trying very hard to save their face… they were running away… So where was the “match” ?(Probably among the Indian players to reach the pavilion…)

Australia could never have scored 359/2. Only reason they did is because the Indians actively helped the Australians. Seems like both the teams were working for an Australian victory. Australia was a good team and they deserve the world cup but England and NZ showed Australia could be made to earn their victory to the very last ball.

Still a match ?

India return to warm welcome

India’s cricket chief, Jagmohan Dalmiya, said the national team had “done the country proud” despite returning home as beaten World Cup finalists.

India were welcomed home as winners despite losing in the final

India were thrashed by 125 runs by Australia in the tournament decider in Johannesburg.

But Dalmiya welcomed the players with open arms when they returned home on Tuesday.

“Our team gave a tremendous performance and has done the country proud,” Dalmiya, president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), said.

**"They played to their full potential and entered the final in a majestic way.

“Yes, we haven’t won but on that day probably Australia were the better team on the field.”

Fans who flocked to Bombay airport were waving national flags and chanting, “'long live India”. **

But skipper Sourav Ganguly was forced to field questions over his decision in the final to field after winning the toss, paving the way for Australia to post a record 359 for two.

“We had one off-day which shattered our dreams of winning the World Cup,” he said.

"There was dampness on the pitch and I knew there was something for the seam bowlers

“We’re definitely disappointed but we’re happy we have played well overall in the tournament.”

Last month, fans across India were buring effigies of the leading players following the team’s early nine-wicket loss in the group stage to Australia.

Ganguly was given a mock funeral in Calcutta and black paint was hurled at middle-order batsman Mohammad Kaif’s house in the northern city of Allahabad.

But the team were back in the supporters’ favour after getting to the final.

“The team has given us a lot of good memories from this World Cup,” said Bombay cricket fan Anurag Saxena.

“They may not have won, but they played like champions.”

Angry India supporters hurl bombs
(AFP)
25 March 2003

CALCUTTA - Drunken cricket fans, dejected after India failed to lift the World Cup, threw
crude home-made bombs and attacked a police vehicle in eastern India, injuring five
policemen, police said yesterday.
he policemen were injured, one of them seriously, when an angry mob turned violent in
Baragarh village in Hooghly district, about 50km north-east of Calcutta, capital of the eastern
state of West Bengal, police said.

West Bengal police deputy inspector Narayan Chandra Ghosh told AFP that immediately after
the match on Sunday, about 20 drunken youths hurled crude bombs at a mobile police vehicle.

Police fired live rounds to disperse them. Ghosh said there were no arrests.

Heated argument
He said a heated argument over India's defeat among youngsters in the industrial city of
Howrah, about 20km west of Calcutta, also sparked violence early yesterday. No one was injured.

Ghosh said security outside Indian skipper Saurav Ganguly's residence here was stepped up
to check any demonstration by cricket fans.

Ganguly's house and that of team-mate Mohammed Kaif were stoned by mobs after India
were beaten by Australia early in the tournament.
