ISLAMABAD: Before proclaiming the status of a non-chemical weapons state (NCWS) in 1997, India was clandestinely pursuing an active chemical weapons programme and its Defence Research and Development Organization scientists had done a considerable work on toxicology and biochemical pharmacology in the Indian city of Gowaliar, reports BBC.

Quoting intelligence sources, the BBC claimed in a report that India by 1997 possessed a stock of nearly 1,000 tonnes of chemical material and mustard gas besides undisclosed quantity of nerve gas, which was manufactured for testing the locally produced protective gear against chemical and biological weapons agents. —APP
