Sales of consumer electronics – products such as cell phones and digital music players – in India are expected to explode to $363 billion in 2015 from just $28 billion in 2005, says research firm Frost & Sullivan.
Agarwal won’t say exactly when SemIndia plans to start building its first fab, but he says it will be this year. SemIndia projects it will cost $750 million and be done in 18 months to two years.
Looking out five to seven years, SemIndia plans to build a state-of-the-art chipmaking factory for about $2.25 billion
So now, in the years to come, India will give competition to some Asian economies. Until now, in Asia, there were no good competitors in this industry.
