India set prime time sitcom on NBC

NBC is looking to change the face of the workplace comedy genre with “Outsourced,” a new pilot set in India. The show will be adapted from an independent film of the same name.

“Outsourced” focuses on a Seattle based customer service manager who moves east to train his replacement when the company outsources his department. While in India, he enters an intimate relationship with a local woman.

Like this season’s CW comedy “Aliens in America,” “Outsourced” will try exploring the clash of Western culture with that of an eastern country.

NBC is known for taking chances on shows, particularly sitcoms, that might not find their audience right away. So far, the plan has worked for “The Office” and “30 Rock,” which won an Emmy for Best Comedy earlier this year.

Ken Kwapis, who works frequently on “The Office,” signed on to direct the pilot. George Wing, writer of “50 First Dates,” will co-write the script with John Jeffcoat.

The movie version of “Outsourced,” directed by Jeffcoat, opened last month in limited release.
