India seek elusive win against England

http://uk.sports.yahoo.com/020618/80/d1drl.html

India set off on a tour of England today in search of a test series victory outside south Asia which has eluded them for more than 16 years.

Their first test series in England for six years will be a huge challenge against a home side which has looked in ominous form in the three-test series against Sri Lanka.

India play a one-day triangular series also involving Sri Lanka on June 27 before the four-test series starts at Lord’s on July 25.

India, who lost a five-test series 2-1 in West Indies last month, will hope their strong batting line-up shows more consistency in England.

India won the second Trinidad test but batting failures led to defeats in the third test in Barbados and the deciding fifth test in Jamaica.

A major setback followed when leading fast bowler Javagal Srinath announced his retirement from tests on returning from West Indies.

The absence of Srinath, who played in 64 tests, will leave India short of experience in a four-pronged pace attack chosen for conditions to suit seam bowling.

Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Ajit Agarkar and Tinu Yohannan have a combined experience of only 37 tests.

Playing the series in what is anticipated to be the drier second half of the English summer, India will pin their hopes on spinners Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh.

Leg-spinner Kumble, touring England for the third time since making his test debut there in 1990, has just recovered from a fractured jaw suffered while batting in West Indies.

Chief selector Chandu Borde expects a tough series but is confident his players – the young fast bowlers in particular – will meet the challenge.

“England will be quite a challenge at home,” he told Reuters by phone on Monday from the western Pune city.

“But a lot of our boys are experienced. How soon they can settle down will matter.”

It will be India’s first test series in England since one they lost 1-0 in 1996. But they won a three-test series 1-0 at home late last year.

India hope to revive memories of 1986 when Kapil Dev led them to a 2-0 test series win in England, the last time they won outside the familiar conditions of the sub-continent.

India’s poor overseas record has been largely attributed to the weakness of their batsmen against pace on bouncy tracks.

But skipper Saurav Ganguly and top batsman Sachin Tendulkar will seek to inspire their side.

Ganguly struck two consecutive centuries on his test debut in 1996 and enters the series having regained his test batting form in the Caribbean, scoring 322 runs at an average of 53.66.

The trip will also hold special significance for Tendulkar after a relatively quiet tour of West Indies, where he scored 331 runs at 41.37.

Tendulkar, now 29 and regarded as the world’s leading batsman, is set to become only the third Indian to play 100 tests when he turns out in the final game at The Oval.

Borde said India would benefit from the presence of a number of youngsters chosen for the one-day series in the build-up for next year’s World Cup.

“There is lot of young blood. They are full of energy and will be trying their best,” Borde said.

So who do you think will win the triangular series. Also who will win the test series. I think England will win both the triangular and test series.

Test matches are boring if they don't have Pakistan in them.

India has a decent chance of beating the englishmen.

I doubt it.

Not because I don't like india or I don't want india to win. Its because first of all England has the home advantage, plus look what they did to SL. So r u saying india is better than SL. I don't think. The most what india can do is tie the series but not win.

Is atherton still playing??

Poor lad retired after being humiliated by Waqar last year.

he was a good batsman though...

at times he was a little racist, but his batting style was good...

So Everyone's retirement has something to do with some Humiliation by Pakistan ? What next Bradman retired after humiliated by ?????

If you didn't know in last 5 matches against Pakistan his avg score was about 55 aprox. which is way better than his over all avg of 38. But

AK

He averaged 48.7 in his last 5 games 9 innings.

I guess I need to tell you his scores of last 9 innings against pakistan :-

73,20,32,65 Not Out,125,26,42,5,51

Total 439 divide it by 8 (coz of one not out) comes out to 54.875 which is approx.

Anyway Even If accept your 48+ avg It is better than his over all avg so how come Waqar annihilated him ??

Let the Indian losing streak begin.

Forget beating England, the team with the so called best batsman in the world couldn’t even last against Kent.

Pathetic team.

Well, atleast Tendy wasn’t out for a duck. He says he’s left the ducks behind. So he decides to score 15.

Gotta love the Indians.

Kent expose Indian bowlers, clinch win

PTI TUESDAY, JUNE 25, 2002 2:22:07 AM ]

CANTERBURY: Kent exploited a sloppy bowling performance by the Indians to pile up an imposing 284 all out in 50 overs in their second practice match at the St Lawrence grounds here on Monday.

And then went on to bowl out the Indians for 263 in 48.5 overs. Sourav Ganguly’s knock of 64 was the highest for his side.

Earlier, the hosts went on the rampage on a flat track despite losing an early wicket as they clobbered the Indian bowlers and could have posted a bigger total had not the two spinners, Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh, managed to check the run flow with two wickets each.

Opener Rob Key (76) and Andrew Symonds (75), the Australian import for the hosts, put on 128 runs for the second wicket off just 125 balls to lay the foundation
for the assault while some lusty hitting by Mark Ealham in the middle overs helped post a big total.

Hats off to India, so what if they lost the match and that too against a non-international team...

Fluke -> no way...

kind of funny to see India lose.. but on the other hand, we have had our hand of loses too.

Let’s not forget the tour of England in 1997 loseing to Warks. And our humiliation by the domestic teams in Australia in 1999/00. Those guys were representing Pakistan too.
I think there was a loss in NZ too.. can’t remember that.

Anyways point of the matter is, it can happen to many teams anywhere in the world your at.

So.. if you are tired, mood off, fielding a different team, etc. can play major factors in losses to counties.

Btw.. I think Wales should play in the Natwest Trophy, or maybe even Scotland, Ireland too, as it would be interesting to see 6 teams competeting in England. Also it will grow the game much bigger.

Yeah, I think international teams seem to take county teams very lightly and loose quickly.

I just checked Cricinfo and saw Wales vs England scorecard, and surprised to see Wales winning.
I didn't know Jacques Kallis is from Wales.

Elusive Indeed...
