India-Pakistan concert in Dubai

Dubai stages first joint India-Pak concert for peace on Indian sub-continent

DUBAI, Oct 11 (AFP) -
Bollywood’s star singer Sonu Nigam and Sufi rock band Junoon perform together in Dubai on Wednesday in what is being billed as the first India-Pakistan concert for peace.

“For the first time in the world, a Pakistani rock band and an Indian playback singer are performing together,” said Naresh Oberoi, promoter of the “One World One Music” campaign.

“They will be the musical ambassadors of peace,” he said.

Some 10,000 tickets have been sold for the show at the Nad Al Sheba golf course and Oberoi hopes 15,000 people will pack the venue.

A special dance area has been built for 6,000 people.

“We hope to build bridges through the cultural exhanges because our art has no boundaries,” said Junoon’s Brian O’Connell.

Another member of Junoon, Salman Ahmad, waxed, “Our music like the poetry of the Sufis of the Indian sub-continent believes in peace, tolerance and love for all people.”

Oberoi said he has plans to take the “One World One Music” concerts to India.
