you donot have to share a lot to make an economic/military alliance, IMO. If India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bengladesh, Nepal, Afghanistan, Iran can form economic alliances, military alliances than a lot can be gained. For example Pakistan or India will not need to put a lots of their armed forces on their common borders, lots of cross border trade will help small industries. But such an alliance would take a lot of efforts, atleast in initial phases as it involves trusting each other, which right now is absent from the area.

I repeat, such alliances can be formed only if there is a common minimum basic ideology. Countries like Iran, Pakistan & India are 3 corners of a triangle - more than half the countries you list are not even democracies, which is a basic right of citizens in the 21st century. Trust is possible only where there are similar idelogies. Why/how would a secular democracy like India trust a dictatorship like Pak or a theological state like Iran ?

However, I agree with your point about trade as long as its mutually beneficial without trying to fit it in the structure of a trade alliance.
