India, Pak closer than before to reach accord on Iran pipeline: Aiyar:
[World News]: London, Jan 20 : India and Pakistan are much closer than before to an agreement on the gas pipeline from Iran, Petroleum Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar has said.
“The plan is for Iran to hammer out two separate agreements with India and Pakistan, thus bypassing the pitfalls of direct negotiations between Delhi and Islamabad,” Aiyar, who is here to attract foreign investment in exploration of oil and natural gas in twenty blocks, said in an interview to ‘Financial Times’ today.
Aiyar said the Iran pipeline would have far-reaching diplomatic effects. Pakistan would earn at least 500 million dollars a year in transit fees.
“I have succeeded in persuading my colleagues in New Delhi that the Iran pipeline is not a question of foreign policy with Pakistan but of India’s own energy security,” Aiyar said.
Last week Aiyar persuaded his counterparts in Bangladesh and Burma to agree in principle to a pipeline that would bring Burma’s huge natural gas reserves to India via Bangladesh.
The deal, which could be hammered out by April and the pipeline built within two years, puts an end to years of Bangladeshi prevarication over whether to sell its own substantial - but untapped - reserves to India.
Under the agreement, Dhaka can decide whether to feed its own gas into the Burma pipeline without triggering the old fear of creating too much of a dependency on India.
“It is a win-win-win situation worth billions of dollars,” Aiyar said. PTI
