India ready for moon mission within seven yrs: ISRO chief
Agence France-Presse
Bangalore, November 21
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is ready to send a man to space within seven years if the government gives the nod, while preparations have already begun for the launch of an unmanned lunar mission, a top official said.
No jealousy. I'm sure India can do it. Europe just sent a unmanned mission to the moon. India also has the capability to send satellites already--just a few more steps to the moon. Money is probably better spent on uplifting the poor though.

in this case, india, china, and dozens of other countries should abandon all spending on anything that is not an absolute necessity and divert all funds to the poor.
the idea that every stomach should be fed and every beggar be off the streets before any money is put towards other activities is noble, but not at all realistic.

But how realistic is that for India to put people on moon while it is still considered as Third World Country? USA, EU, China and Russia are not TWC.
how much money india/pakistan spent on defense for the last 50 years
actully pakistan spends twice per capita to keep up with india
moon mission is a very tiny amount compared to what both spend on arms.

I agree that this particular activity is harder to justify for India, but where does it end? given the number of people below the poverty level, almost everything can be seen as excessive spending. why is the PM driven in a Mercedes rather than a rickshaw? this logic allows for zero progress for the country.
While political alignment definitions exclude China and Russia from the "Third world", keep in mind that there are 200 million people living in poverty in China, and 1/3 of all Russians are living in poverty (higher percentage than India's 25%). these numbers are not peanuts.
Shouldn't these countries also be halting all technological progress and use the money to eradicate poverty too?

No they should not, and neither do India. I didn’t say that India should halt technological progress in order to feed all hungry people first. But talking about going to moon is just too far fetched by any means. Sending satellite into space and putting people on moon is like comparing apples and oranges. Even country like USA could not do it twice despite of all the technological advances we have seen since 1969. NASA does not have a budget and resources to accomplish that milestone again. You think India can? If you think that you must be the most optimistic person on the face of this earth (or moon?).
