Achieving yet another milestone in its space programme, India on Thursday successfully launched its first indigenous all-weather radar imaging satellite RISAT-1 that will boost its remote sensing capabilities and facilitate agriculture and disaster management

The perfect launch of the satellite catapulted India into a select band of countries having indigenous radar imaging technology

Only the US, Canada, Japan and the European consortium have the technology so far," P S Veeraraghavan, Director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram said.

Hailing the launch, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said it was an important milestone in India’s space programme and congratulated the ISRO scientists for displaying mastery of the complex launch vehicle technology.

It was the 20th continuous successful launch of PSLV. next month pslv is launching a french satellite. the stage has come when isro is making money from its launches now.

next steps are lunar mission 2 and india's first mars mission.

RISAT has microwave technology and will be able to see in the dark with the resolution upto 1m. If India loses one satellite than with it we lose 45-50 transponders:), next requirement is to develop cryogenic engines for rocket so that heavier satellites with more number of transponders can be launched. ISRO is launching satellites of other since a decade and even has record of launching 10 satellites with one rocket:k:

BTW by the end of this year a desi cryo engine will be used to send our second mission on moon. this time it will carry a lander and a moon buggy.

I hope that they get ready with it, ToT of cryogenic never took place even though Ruskies were ready but Yanks pressurized them to not to do so. It is amazing that whatever Indira touched it came out with success:)

PS: I am born jatt but not jatt wife:) and work in government organization where people have too much of time:D

It is good to see that India launches satellite risat 1 for space exploration and to work to facilitate the agriculture and disaster management. As the satellite is equipped with radar imaging technology which will identify the exact features and area of the disaster-affected areas.
