PUNE: One in four girls and one in six boys in India have been sexually abused before they turn 18 and nearly 70 per cent of all sexual assault victims are aged 17 or less.
These are two findings of a survey conducted by the Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Sanstha’s women’s study and research centre.
The centre conducted the survey over the last two years with the help of four nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) — Alochana, a documentation centre; Muskan; Ranjana Gaikwad of the special cell for women and children; and, Open Space.
Material for the survey was also collected from various internet sites, books and other literature on child sex abuse.
Pallavi Kasande, co-ordinator of the research centre, told TOI that the median age for the reported sexual abuse was nine years, while about 20 per cent of the victims were aged below eight.
Around 50 per cent of the victims who were forcibly sodomised, sexually assaulted with an object or forcibly fondled were aged below 12

There are three kinds of lies
1) lies
2) damn lies
3) Statistics with the enormity in that order. Yes there is a problem. We have accepted the same and trying to find ways and means of containing the same. Can the same about some of our neighbouring countries whose citizens try to poke fun at us at the slightest pretext. Would there be any mechanism to conduct such surveys in those countries. A free and fair survey to see how many children are abused. The survey would be just free but not fair...

I think that sexual abuse of children is a huge problem everywhere. The difference is that in Pakistan and India it is hidden, and those guilty usually aren't punished. Also I don't think that kids are taught to be as aware of the possibilities, so parents don't specifically tell them that no one should ever touch you in certain places, etc.
The biggest problem in the subcontinent is probably sexual abuse in the family. It is almost always hushed up, and the abuser usually moves on to other girls in the family. I have heard of several cases of this.

Actually many NGOs are working in this direction, but almost every NGO is trying to cash such issues by showing fake statistics.
