India got thrashed - so why am I happy ?

Re: India got thrashed - so why am I happy ?

^ Your points, I am afraid, are no different from what I routinely hear from most of my well-meaning Indian friends.

All I will say for now, my friend, is that 1 Billion people cannot live on the achievements of a section of the Private Sector, while the Government continues to be the same bunch of sharp-toothed,* paan-chewing*, corrupt cowbelt nincompoops (for the most part) who have little skill except to walk-out at the slightest opportunity in the parliament.

The way we are going, I don't see the political scene changing anytime soon. That and unbridled population growth is a deadly cocktail which will take our country to the point of no return pretty quick.

That said, Pl read the topic of this thread. My intention was not to offer any real solutions but only to emphasize that most people wouldn't realize we have a problem if one goes by the amount of print space and air time the media gives to Cricket/Bollywood instead of more real and pressing issues.

Why should Dhoni and Malika Sherawat adorn the first page, but 15 policemen killed by Naxalities in Chattisgarh get a passing mention on page 3 of Indian Newspapers ?

Re: India got thrashed - so why am I happy ?

^^ Touche.

IMO, Some1 and StirCrasy you both love India and are smart and practical people but just on the extreme ends of the scale; some1 being a pessimist and stircrasy being an optimist. I'll always want to be an optimist even though if it makes me look a little less practical.

Re: India got thrashed - so why am I happy ?

^Infiniti yaar....no surprise that you are rooting for StirCrasy....he is playing to the gallery a little bit with those rhetorical statements (that you highlighted).

See the big picture for once...India is more than Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi and Kolkata. Nearly half the population in the country is illiterate who have zero clue about what is good for them...and these are the same guys who go to the booth on election day and elect our rulers !!

Re: India got thrashed - so why am I happy ?

I'm just wondering do the educated also not care about garbage being thrown in India's waterways and streets or do they also contribute to it without really thinking about it much. My cousins throw picnic garbage right on the beach but I felt so weird doing it yet I didn't want to say anything to them and it's really not my place to give them a lecture. But that garbage would go into the waterways and pollute the drinking water even more and cause problems in the gutters :(

just on a side note, I was wondering if there are any reputable, legitimate charities/organizations that promote literacy in India? Always wanted to donate money but i'm hoping it'll go to the schools rather than being pocketed by the organizers

Re: India got thrashed - so why am I happy ?

Nahi yaar, please dont take it that way, seriously. We have debated at length in the past and I know you dont debate for the heck of it. I totally follow what you said and I mentioned it in my post that none of you are wrong. It's just the outlook. You are brutally honest and practical whether it's about indian politics or indian cricket; but over time that has led me to believe that you always try to keep a pessimistic outlook towards things.

Re: India got thrashed - so why am I happy ?

Hey good to see you back. Back from India??

Re: India got thrashed - so why am I happy ?

...and sadly most of the times I am right.

When Bruce Yardley couldn't praise Wasim Jaffer enough during the Pak Series confidently predicting that he would be very successful in Australia, I was not convinced. I had seen how uncomfortable Jaffer was when bowlers got decent bounce...and so far in Australia, Jaffer has proved me right about how I thought he would fare.

There is a thin line between a realist and a pessimist these days...I guess.

And IndoPak.....when I am in India, I throw garbage all around and even piss al fresco. You could call me a hypocrite. But what is one supposed to do if there are no trash-cans or rest rooms where they should be.

Re: India got thrashed - so why am I happy ?

I know the situation is not as rosy as the media portrays. It's not just corruption that is our problem, it's not even education or poverty; sure they are part of the problem but IMO, it's the lack of confidence and motivation in Indians which is the bigger problem. And that is why I seconded StirCrasy's statement. You have to have pride in your culture and your country even if it is slightly misplaced.

:D

Re: India got thrashed - so why am I happy ?

no infiniti, i didn’t go to India(really want to go though)…just haven’t been posting much lately.

:smack:@ pissing in the open…Man Some1, that was too much info for a Sunday night.:hayaa:

Re: India got thrashed - so why am I happy ?

really? half the people do not know what is good for them? (whether it is because of illiteracy or otherwise is another matter). Wake up man - this sort of cliches are useless. Are we talking about the same country where these masses have delivered losses to ruling party in massive scale more than once? At national and state level?

And I know India's villages, a number of them. I grew up amongst them with my family business taking my folks (me tagging along) to dozen plus villages every month. There are problem communities granted but dismissing the progress in a large proportion of villages is incorrect.

I can write a whole essay about how Indian villages are finding their own way into the 21st century and yes it is a different model than how the cities do.

I am only playing to a gallery of one. You.

Look up http://www.aifoundation.org/donate/ . Very much on the up and up; while at it browse through the site and see the people involved.

Re: India got thrashed - so why am I happy ?

What economy technology have we imported that we do not know how to manage?

Re: India got thrashed - so why am I happy ?

How about collecting the trash in a bag and depositing it wherever the next garbage can is? When you drive 6 hours in a american highway and your kid generates garbage do you toss it of the window or collect it in a trash bag? May be if you do that, a few kids will watch and learn from you, even in those illiterate villages.

Re: India got thrashed - so why am I happy ?

Anti-incumbency voting does not necessarily make the voters intelligent. Most voters don't see the long-term but only care about the pebble currently in their shoes.

And in Bihar/UP ...rampant voting along caste-lines gave Lallu and his educated up to 4th grade wife Rabri - a run of 12 years in Bihar.....not even a multi-million scam could stop Lallu.

StirCrasy, you are romanticizing India too much.....and please don't give me ...I am a grass-root village guy BS....

Re: India got thrashed - so why am I happy ?

Now, I am afraid, you are talking all garbage (no pun intended) , this kind of rhetorical talk may give you a round of applause, but in practice - it is what I call --- "beautiful nonsense".

I will leave it at that. No more rebuttals from my end.

You can live in your fantasy world....and I will carry on in my depressive mode.

Re: India got thrashed - so why am I happy ?

^^seems like u r a great failure in ur life thats y u try to rant ur failures on everybody.carryon my sympathies r with u.

Re: India got thrashed - so why am I happy ?

Some1 - what is wrong with voting along caste lines or along any other lines? That is called REPRESENTATION. The idea of a democracy is NOT to create clique of economic elite or political elite or military elite that will make policy with the masses having no say.

The short term pebbles you disdain are exactly what the people are feeling and so reflect that in their votes.

I can see why we would strongly object to criminals being in power or people who can afford to wait for a bathroom defecating in the open.

But running down what is clearly one of the greatest turnaround of the under dog stories simply is incorrect.

Re: India got thrashed - so why am I happy ?

Please don't be angry my fellow member. What exactly is impractical about the suggestion that you stuff your garbage in a bag and toss it in when you see a garbage can (instead of spreading it all over as you said you had to)?

You did that yourself and then blame the people of India whom you referred to as the half illiterate population.

In Thamizh we have a word for this "asadu" - I don't know how to translate it. But I don't want to call you that or any names because you are mostly right when you cite factual observations but somehow completely go wrong in the conclusions you draw based on those facts!

Re: India got thrashed - so why am I happy ?

Thanks brother. I knew I could count on you.
