LONDON (Reuters) - India were given an ultimatum by cricket’s ruling body on Thursday to accept their final offer over sponsorship deals for next year’s World Cup or face a substantial compensation claim.

**The Indian players refused to accept a stipulation by the International Cricket Council (ICC) insisting that previous individual sponsorship agreements be frozen if they clashed with World Cup sponsorships for the tournament in South Africa and Zimbabwe during February and March. **

The Indian board had delayed announcing an initial 30-man squad as required by the end of last month and wished to postpone beyond the December 31 deadline the naming of a final party of 15. It is threatening to send a much-weakened party.

This has been rejected by the ICC who warned in a statement on Thursday that if the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) failed to send its best team and its players sign the individual sponsorship agreements by January 14, it would face a substantial damages claim from cricket’s governing body.

BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya told Reuters he would not respond to the statement from cricket’s ruling body until Friday.

FRUITLESS

ICC president Malcolm Gray said: "The discussions with the BCCI have been both exhaustive and, to date, fruitless.

"The ICC has sent two delegations to India to discuss the issue, negotiated a number of significant concessions with its sponsors and sought at all times to be both flexible and pragmatic in its dealings with the BCCI.

"Despite these steps, the BCCI remains unable or unwilling to meet its contractual obligations and if anything it has gone backwards on what it is prepared to accept from the ICC.

“In light of the stance taken by the Indian Board, the ICC World Cup Contracts Committee had no option but to advise the BCCI there were no further concessions possible and that on the basis of what is on offer the BCCI has clear and compelling contractual agreements the ICC is now looking for it to fulfil.”

He said the ICC offers of concessions included shortening the period when individual deals would have to be frozen and also a revenue-sharing agreement with the players.

The ICC statement also stressed that the BCCI had originally agreed to the World Cup sponsorship terms “without qualification” in March this year.

Gray warned that the BCCI faced “large compensation” claims against it for failing to send its best team to the finals.

He continued: “It is impossible to quantify the level of claims before the event but it is clear that if the BCCI does not meet its obligations and there are damages claims made as a result, the BCCI faces the potential of these claims being made against it for not delivering on its contract.”

Here we go again

:k:

This has to happen one day. In fact i was surprised that there is no “fine” or “penalty” on the country if it fails to announce 30 players untill deadline. If no action can be taken against the country why in the first place deadline there ?

One other thing that i read was Waugh’s interview saying “he is confused that if players out side that 30 players pool can be selected in final 15 playes”. This is rubbish too. Akhir 30 playes announce is leyee hee ho rahey heen k last 15 will be (and should be) from those 30 players. Personaly i m a big fan of Waugh but ICC should not allow any Country to include any player other then the ones named in 30 players pool. And there should be no exceptions (even of injuries coz we still you have 15 other players to choose from)

Unfortunately, India is too big a cricketing country (counted in $ of revenue) for the ICC to just kick it to the wayside. Even if their team stinks, money talks.

I am waiting for the day India will send its 2nd grade team and how ICC reacts. And how Sponsors react. That would be fun. ;)

Once again India being the roots of all the problems, can they please use their heads once in their lives

Indian board meets to discuss ICC ultimatum

CALCUTTA (Reuters) - The Indian cricket board was meeting on Friday to discuss a response to Thursday’s ultimatum from the International Cricket Council (ICC) that they accept an offer over sponsorship deals for next year’s World Cup or face heavy compensation claims.

“An informal meeting of the board was planned today. But with the ICC attacking Indian players through the public release of its new conditions, the tenor of the meeting will change,” a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official said.

A news conference with BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya has been scheduled at 5.30 pm (1200 GMT), he added.

The ICC statement came after a series of meetings with the Indian board to resolve the issue ahead of the tournament in southern Africa in February and March.

The Indian players have refused to accept a stipulation by the ICC insisting that previous individual sponsorship agreements be frozen if they clashed with World Cup sponsorships.

The Indian board had delayed announcing an initial 30-man squad – as required by the end of last month – and were looking to postpone beyond the December 31 deadline the naming of a final party of 15.

It has also threatened to send a much-weakened side, but the ICC warned on Thursday that if the BCCI failed to send its best team and its players do not sign the individual sponsorship agreements by January 14, it would face the damages claim from the ICC.

ICC president Malcolm Gray said on Thursday that its discussions with the BCCI had been fruitless despite concessions from sport’s governing body, including shortening the period when individual deals would have to be frozen and a revenue-sharing agreement with the players.

The ICC statement also stressed that the BCCI had originally agreed to the World Cup sponsorship terms “without qualification” in March this year.

The controversy threatens a repeat of the crisis which marred the run-up to the 12-team Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka in September, when leading India players refused to sign up until the ICC provided last minute concessions.

The Indian board had raised hopes of a settlement when it said earlier this month that it was close to resolving the issue.

This is getting ugly

Indian board refuses ICC’s World Cup contract offer

CALCUTTA, December 20, 2002 (Reuters)

The Indian cricket board face hefty fines after refusing to accept an ultimatum from the sport’s world governing body over sponsorship deals for next year’s World Cup.

A meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday sought more concessions from the International Cricket Council (ICC) for its endorsement-rich players to play in the tournament in southern Africa in February and March.

“The player terms have been undergoing changes, they can change more taking into account the particular difficulties of Indian players,” BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya told reporters after a marathon meeting of the top BCCI office-bearers.

The BCCI will hold an urgent general meeting on Wednesday after a teleconference with the ICC on Monday before finalising its response, he said.

The meeting followed Thursday’s offer by the ICC, which gave an ultimatum to the BCCI that its players sign the terms by January 14 or face heavy compensation claims. India must submit its final 15-strong squad by December 31.

The Indian players are central to the contracts dispute which arises from a seven-year ICC rights deal worth $550 million for its events up to 2007.

The ICC want players to freeze individual sponsorships during the tournament which clash with official World Cup backers.

Why does it seem like the ICC is racist and always going after Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka for something or the other. Chucking, contracts, match-fixing, and on and on.

Yes this will get ugly.ICC will have to come in term with reality.
And all cricket players and fan should support India.Because if today its hurting India’s intrest tomorrow it could be Pakistan or Sri Lanka.
