India and US confirm nuclear pact

According to Bbc, it is a historic Milestone.
Please discus the affects of this Deal in US-Pak relations, Pak-Sino relations and how is deal going to affect the region?

============================

india and the United States say that they have finalised a deal on civilian nuclear co-operation, which would end three decades of US sanctions.

A statement released by both sides described the deal, which has been held up in negotiations for two years, as a “historic milestone”.

It is not yet clear how it addresses thorny issues such as India’s right to reprocess civilian nuclear fuel.

But India said that the deal did not cover nuclear testing.

India has demanded the right to carry out nuclear tests.

NUCLEAR POWER IN INDIA
India has 14 reactors in commercial operation and nine under construction
Nuclear power supplies about 3% of India’s electricity
By 2050, nuclear power is expected to provide 25% of the country’s electricity
India has limited coal and uranium reserves
Its huge thorium reserves - about 25% of the world’s total - are expected to fuel its nuclear power programme long-term

Global nuclear powers

“This deal deals primarily with civil nuclear co-operation,” India’s National Security Adviser MK Narayanan said.

“If there is a test we will come to that later on.”

Much debate

The deal means that India will get access to US civilian nuclear technology if it opens its facilities to inspection.

Critics say the pact could encourage India to build its nuclear weapons arsenal, and that it sends the wrong message to countries like Iran, whose nuclear ambitions Washington opposes.

It has also faced opposition from the communists and opposition parties in India who have argued that the deal could undermine the country’s sovereignty.

COUNTDOWN TO AGREEMENT
July 2005: India and the US announce the deal
March 2006: Deal “finalised” in Delhi during visit of US President George W Bush
July 2006: US House of Representatives approves deal
November 2006: US Senate votes in favour of deal
July 2007: US and India finalise negotiations

But supporters of the accord say it will help India meet its soaring energy demands by reversing three decades of US sanctions, imposed after nuclear tests were carried out by India in 1974 and 1998.

The implementation agreement, or “123 agreement”, is designed to include all operational aspects of the deal, which its supporters say will galvanise strategic ties between the world’s two biggest democracies.

Before it takes effect, the finalised deal must be approved by the US Congress, while India needs clearance from the Nuclear Suppliers Group of countries.

Re: India and US confirm nuclear pact

It's an historic event. India's achievements in science and technology are truly commendable..the deal is testament to India's sound civilian goverenance rooted in democracy -

Re: India and US confirm nuclear pact

What are people saying in Indian news papers...what are the proposed uses of technology/knowledge gained by this deal?

Re: India and US confirm nuclear pact

Nuclear bombardment of FATA begins in an hour...

Re: India and US confirm nuclear pact

^^ this deal is a disaster for pakistan

Re: India and US confirm nuclear pact

Why ???

Re: India and US confirm nuclear pact

cause, India is getting American help in building its nuclear power plants

Nuclear plants need a lot of water, that means India is going to Dam more rivers that flow into Pakistan and Pakistan won't be able to do anything about it since America is backing India

and Pakistan also has energy needs, USA by siding with India has alienated Pakistan

India can use the uranium to make more nukes and threaten pakistan and dominate its neighbors in a regional hegemony

Re: India and US confirm nuclear pact

a bit oversimplified and overstated but somewhat truthful I think. But as long a strong India remains as a threat in the minds of people in Pakistan, the establishments (= army, mullahs and shaddow agencies) can peck their own people to slow death and enrich themselves. In this respect, the US-India deal only strengthens Pakistan's m.o

Re: India and US confirm nuclear pact

This argument i am listening for the first time. Can you substantiate with links along with the quantity of water required.

All uranium supplied to specific hand picked plants will be subjected IAEA inspections. Besides, making more nukes when india already supposed to have many of them(just like pakistan) cannot make it into a hegemony. India has enough reseverves to make nukes within it's own territory. But doesn't have enough of it to run power plants.

Re: India and US confirm nuclear pact

Interestingly the very first thing that came to my mind was that this deal would make India less dependent on conventional methods of generating energy (Hydro and other) and it would make India use less of water from rivers that eventually Run to Pak and are used by Irrigation purposes in Pak.!

Re: India and US confirm nuclear pact

The energy needs for India has grown exponentially, and the Nuclear Energy would be able to supply a part of the shortage. So it won't be able to use less Hydro energy.

Re: India and US confirm nuclear pact

I thought Nuclear generators use heavy water? Never heard of water supply impacted one way or other due to nuke plants. Ofcourse contamination can impact but that's planned for only in Superman 45

Re: India and US confirm nuclear pact

India tends not to build nuclear power plants close to pakistan. new powerplants will come closer to bengal and south. hence no blockage of water to pakistan.
Adding more nukes to Indian arsenal wont make a difference... 100 nukes or 500 nukes doesnt matter for obvious reasons.. even 100 is just too many.
The biggest difference it will make is it will act as an catalyst in the energy hungry india. at the pace india is growing it needs lots and lots of energy and most of the indian power comes from thermal sources.
giving nuclear tech to india will decrease indian dependence on fossil fuel and hence help the environment.
also it will bring india and america closer and india will be more accepted as a nuclear power in the rest of the world.
if development of india means threat to pakistan... then yes it is not good for pakistan.
