Nearly four million people in India are infected.
Only South Africa has more cases, with five
million people carrying the disease.
Mr Miller says although the number of people
with AIDS accounts for less than one percent
of India's population, the numbers are still
dangerously high.
Correspondents say the Indian government has
launched a nationwide programme to halt the
disease, but it faces an uphill battle because
of the enormous social and cultural stigma
attached to AIDS.
In May, the UNAIDS executive director, Peter
Piot forecast that India would overtake South
Africa, if steps were not taken to curb the
disease.
From the newsroom of the BBC World Service
Definently something India should be worried about…
What do you expect when you have more than million armies & largest population of flesh trade in the world close to 10 times the number of full blown Aids 4 million. The number of non tested but expected to be positive for infection is close to over 10 millions
But the way supply & demand theory of free market works thats hardly 1% of the billion Indians where life is cheap & dowry expensive
Who cares for the rickshawpuller, coolies on railway stations lepers, beggers,as long as NRI are praised by the P.M. egotistically of being I.T. Super Power ,Defeating tiny Pakistan 4 times(indian Version) ..while being quiet about 62 massacre of the army by chinese)..India lives in fantasy of Delhi .& bollywood.
do u guys even know the population of india, its more than 1 billion,so the percenntage of population affected by AIDS is nothing in comparison to many other countries. u people want to critisize india just for the sake of it, thats why ur views are myopic.
You know, I'm a very patriotic Pakistani, so I'll say this much:
Focussing on India's problems instead of our own has been one of the many source's of Pakistan's downfall.
How about we talk of all the AIDS cases in Pakistan and the futility of AIDS programs in Pakistan due to an even heavier social stigma towards the disease.
And while we're on that, lets talk about how we Pakistanis are in denial that AIDS is even a problem in Pakistan.

Reena
That is the main cause of Hiv in Asia & Africa ,besides blood being infected etc, gays tourists druggy needles, hetero sexual transmissionnfrom truck driver like middle man to house wives from road side prostitutes.
4 million is AIDS cases but asymptomatic hiv postive can only be estimated in 3rd world like india b/c they are sooo
poor cant be tested …YES it is a fact that world wannaby super power power does not pay to test its victiims.10 million out of approx billion is appriox 1% but galli ka gunda kya jaane ?
Iagree wih you …I ve said more than enough as it is …these creepy Aids subjects are like demon in the dark lurking haunting us as nightmasres ion our subconsciuos what the world is coming too SODOM?GOMOROH
Most of these cases are the cause of illitrates watching Bollywood movies.
Specially youngsters as they see hot young stars like Kareena, they are tempted so they go out and have unprotected sex.
Well, I can honestly say that many ,er most, lollywood movies are worse and much closer to porn movies. Would you say, then, that the movie-going audience in Pakistan is more sexually hungry after watching such films then Indians after watching an Indian film?
I agree though. That's one area where Bollywood fails. It relies on sex and violence to sell movies. That's not film making. But then, the movie industry of our own country is in a worse state.
But I dont know if the influence is THAT strong that one such Indian movie arouses one's senses immediately. Ideas do get into pple's heads, but do you honestly think that if Bollywood movies did not exist, that problems like premarital pregnancies, adultery, wide spread fornication, mujras, etc wouldn't exist?
Do you honestly think AIDS wouldn't exist?
India's film industry is really a minor factor, I think.

Whos meddling.. The disscusion just happened to be about India. If we were to talk about Pakistan, then I would go in depth on Pakistan AIDS problem. But in this pst, we are talking about Indias AIDS epidemic which seems to be spreading. Why shouldn't we atleast take notice? I for one am not using this insult or belittle their country.

Whatever the reason, fact is fact, they have the second highest rate of AIDS infection in the world...
It doesn't matter what the percentage is, 4 million is a lot of people.
PCG, your'e talking about Lollywood movies, my question is who is watching Lolllywood movie ?
Even if Pakistanis are watching both industries' production they still are taught at a young age not to commit adultry, but India where majority is hindu, they don't have any no to adultery infact hinduism promotes sex, so there isn't alot of restrictions over there.
What I would like to know is that what percentage of those 4 millions are muslim, who were transmited sexually.

Umair,
You are speaking about Hinduism without knowing it. Nowhere does the religion promotes it.
In major cities you will find there is a lot of freedom, but that freedom is is given to the youngsters by their parents. You should understand Hinduism is different compared to Islam. Hindus need not ask a Maulvi regarding how to sit, stand or sleep.
And, remember most of the culture in pakistan is Hindu dominated.
You might be surprised that some of the most advanced states have the max. infections like Andhra Pradesh,Maharashtra and Goa and the North East.
It is true there is a big threat of HIV looming large over the population and tragedy is that many people are not even aware about a disease called AIDS. Illiteracy is a major cause for spread of the disease. People are not aware of the implications of the national disaster.
Let us hope this demon is controlled before it spreads.
My knowledge of hinduism is pretty limited. I had an old friend who was hindu, and according to her, premarital sex and adultery are not promoted in India at all, and most families in India feel uncomfortable watching Indian movies in which sex and skin is used to sell the movie. That is why films family-oriented films are hits, because they're not so reliant upon sex to sell. Even then, I remember the hindu families around where I live would always complain about India's fashion industry and India's fashion in films because they felt it was not representative of what Indians do wear, and the open culture shown in the movies isn't representative of how they raise their kids. You'd be surprised to know that conservative Hindu families are no less conservative than conservative Muslim families. They dont like their girls mingling with guys either. That is why I've argued so many times on these forums that it is absolutely necessary to allow interaction between males and females in society, because otherwise desperados roam.
It may very well be that the restrictive pressure from families may lead to premarital sex, homosexuals, adultery, etc.
I know personally, that even muslim girls and guys abroad Pakistan are freely engaged in pre-marital sex behind their parents backs, and most of these families that I've come across are very restrictive.
Islam, on the other hand, does not prohibit men and women from TALKING to each other. Yet, if a man and a woman are seen conversing with each other in a village, the whole village presses insane punishments on them like gang rape, etc. These aren't muslim traditions. These are hindu traditions.
I'm just hypothesizing here. But I do want to diminish some stereotypes Pakistanis have about Indians.
