This is a short video made for the Pakistani people. Please watch and pass the message on to families you know that could benefit from this information:

Thanks for posting it.

It is a silent killer and everyone should be aware of the dangers of diabetes and the damage it does.

Re: Independence Day Celebrations: Aug 11-17: Diabetes Awareness Documentary

Absolutely. I myself am borderline diabetic. I have a big time family history, and have been hit once during one of my pregnancies. I have been asked to watch what I eat very carefully but I often slack off. Got to get back on track.

Very nice video and sharing on the occasion. Thank you, liked it and the message it gave to the public. A real-life example on an individual, a survivor, who rescued himself from the jaws of disease. Another example of an individual who has suffered badly at the hands of it. It is a motivation and will-power that comes into play in individuals when they go through tough periods, such as when diseases hit. Harsh conditions pull their self-esteem down but with support, it can go back up just as quick. One of the things I have come across with people who are diabetic is the tendency is give into sweets. The craving of food is not as much as perhaps the high-sugar foods, it is really hard to resist. I would have perhaps liked to know if there are any particular methods to control the craving of sweets/desserts other than utilizing one's will-power. Sometimes you need to be shown a door if you can't open one.

Dhobi bhai, that's a good question about how to control the craving.

I'll give you the example of my dad, who is himself a physician, but had a family history of everything, heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, etc. When he was younger, I remember he used to eat just about anything, red meats, desserts, etc., but at 40 or so, he felt angina pains, and at 50 he had a quadruple bypass. Since then, he made a conscious decision to avoid all foods that were bad for his condition. Even if we had them at home he would just say no. My mom worked very hard in creating interesting meals for him (she is a doctor too) after consultataion with a dietician. But what mattered most is my dad's willingness to give up ad adjust.

Today he is a healthy (masha'Allah) 70 year old who walks 3-4 miles every day, eats an incredibly balanced diet, does yoga and breathing exercises. He has had 3-4 heart surgeries (stents) in the past 10 years but his discipline and energy has never been distracted.

When I ask him how he controlled himself, his one and only one answer is :make a decision and stick to it.

I know many of us cannot do that but we need to understand that a simple tempation is a temporary gratification that has longterm negative consequences.

And also, people around us need to be supportive of our decision and not give in or feel sorry. In fact, my mom gave up many things as well so my dad never has to feel bad seeing her eat a laddoo!

.
i think family support is also very important too. like in my hosue since dad doesn't eat dessert, not a lot of dessert is cooked or brought. not like some houses that i've seen. so like you said nikky, that support is important. if you get rid of desserts in your house, then it won't be so much of a temptation for those with diabetes. and heck! you'd be doing your own body a huuuuuuuuge favor!

Yes, education for not just the patient but their families as well, because many a time you see moms giving in, hai bechaara, not realizing that their "love" could kill.
