In sickness and in health...

Right wing televangelist, Pat Robertson was quoted as saying that it is okay to divorce your partner is they are suffering from a debilitating illness that all but renders them dead.http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44530424/ns/health-alzheimers_disease/

Christian vows specifically commit the partners to one another, in times of good health and bad, but what would or should a person do when faced with such an ordeal? Should they stand by their partner or leave them because their partner can no longer give them the companionship that they expect from a married relationship?

Does it matter how old the couple is - let’s suppose they are young and with a long life ahead of them, would that make a difference? Would the specific illness make a difference?

Please discuss.

I don't think I can say anything about someone should do in that situation. It depends on the individual. I can't place myself in that situation, so I can't say what I would do. I do gravitate towards the idea of staying and being a loyal partner, but I recognize that is NOT easy.
