I know you are pointing towards extremism, yes its true to some extent.
However you have to consider the fact that he was assassinated before the Soviets withdrew from Afghanistan. Zia was a source of unity for the Afghan mujahideen groups. He had contacts with them personally and did his best to keep them together. However soon after he was killed, infighting between the Mujahideen began which created a vacuum which allowed Taliban to gain a foothold. You have to remember that the Taliban emerged after Zia was killed, in BB’s tenure. It was because of the infighting in Afghanistan that the leftovers of the Afghan Jihad infested Pakistan, which would have most definitely be avoided if Zia was there as he had an elaborate Afghan policy unlike BB.
