In lighter news

Zia Mohyeddin writes a letter to Dawn complaining about Ramiz Raja’s english

**‘Cool Captain Dhoni’
**
THOSE who write ‘Exclusive’ reports for a newspaper are chosen not just for their expertise on the subject they write on, but also because they are supposed to be reasonably conversant with the language of the newspaper.

Mr. Ramiz Raja in his ‘Exclusive’ titled “Cool Captain Dhoni….” likes weaving idioms into his sentences – “not once did the camp flinched in the eye of the storm…” – but does not realize that the result is an insipid sentence devoid of any sense.

Even if your newspaper is committed to not tampering with his copy, it is vital for the integrity of Dawn not to print words like humdrum, unknown, unphased and uncluttered as hum drum, un known, un phased and un cluttered.

“The strength of character enthuse players to play….” And “His pick to bowl the last disastrous over against South Africa” are just two of the countless solecisms that may be worthy of Navjot Singh Siddhu, but not of a reputable paper like yours.

Re: In lighter news

The irrefutable claims of this esteemed author are a testament to his profound character.

Re: In lighter news

Mr. Mohyeddin is right. Just look at the last paragraph of Rameez’s article below and notice all the mistakes:

He loves playing on his play station and likes an adventure on a bike. He has not been corrupted by the enormous wealth or the razzmatazz of big cities, quite content to a hum drum existence at Ranchi. News is that he would like to quit the game in couple of years time but i doubt ifIndia will give him hat choice.H has been a magnificient leader of men and a worthy champion!

Re: In lighter news

one thing I have noticed amongst many Pakistanis is the use of 'did'. More often than not they write, for example, '...who did moved my cheese...'. Probably not just Pakistanis, since Indians have similar issues as well.
