In Islam, Can a woman work if she wants to?

Suppose your husband does not want you to work because he can afford you. Can the wife still work (e.g. a professional like doctor, engineer, architect etc.) and pursue her career till she had her kids? Can a husband stop his wife from working?

Re: In Islam, Can a woman work if she wants to?

He can stop. But should not marry someone like that if he has objection to it.

No general answer can be given it depends on couple understanding and expectations.

These things need to be sorted out BEFORE marriage.

Re: In Islam, Can a woman work if she wants to?

This is their mutual understanding.

Re: In Islam, Can a woman work if she wants to?

of course but within the Islamic confines and parameters. umm-ul-momineen Hazrat Khadeeja Bibi [r.a.] was a business woman.

Re: In Islam, Can a woman work if she wants to?

I don't think this will necessarily help every time because people change their minds. So if the husband agrees with the wife working before, but later on changes his mind, does she HAVE to quit her job?

Yes. She has to listen to everything he says. She best have practiced her sandwich making and massaging skills before hand.

Re: In Islam, Can a woman work if she wants to?

I know people can change their minds. But she will have better case for it. I did say he should not marry these women if he has any reservation for her working in future.

Ultimately it is between the two to decide.

(Lots of men do encourage their wives to work though)

Re: In Islam, Can a woman work if she wants to?

If she can maintain the her wifely duties and still wants to work , why not ?

Re: In Islam, Can a woman work if she wants to?

If he changes his mind then there must be some logic behind this change. May be wife is not good in balancing her family and work life. When husband's give permission to wife to work then they expect that their wife should balance her life and give quality time to her family.

Re: In Islam, Can a woman work if she wants to?

NO.

Re: In Islam, Can a woman work if she wants to?

She would have to be pretty strong to break free from that chain in the kitchen.

Re: In Islam, Can a woman work if she wants to?

Didn't Hazrat Khadija RA continue managing her business even after the marriage?

Re: In Islam, Can a woman work if she wants to?

I heard that (Islamically) a woman is supposed to take permission from husband even for stepping outside the home............ so she shouldn't do the job without husband's consent (islamically)...

Re: In Islam, Can a woman work if she wants to?

yeah but thats because the prophet (SAW) never forbade her from doing so...but would she have been within her islamic rights to continue if he had forbidden her?

im sorry but ISLAMICALLY the answer to this question is NO ...islamically the only time you can go against your husband's wishes is if he forbids you from completing your islamic farayz (your religious obligations/requirements, he can still forbid you from nawfli/extra ibaadat and you would have to, but your requirements he can't forbid you from)

if he's being completely irrational the best thing you can do is protest...but if he sticks to his guns you'd be obliged islamically to obey him

absolutely. Washing dishes, vacuuming, folding laundry, cooking ... she can work as much as she wants

^lol

Re: In Islam, Can a woman work if she wants to?

Bibi Khadija, the wife of the prophet [pbuh] was a very successful entrepreneur.

Now if your husband does not want you to work, you could talk to him and ask specific reasons. Usually most matters can be resolved via mature discussions.

Re: In Islam, Can a woman work if she wants to?

What if I had made it clear to him and his family that I'll be working after marriage and that if they have any issues with that, they can turn down the rishta right away but they agree and then after marriage he changes his mind for no valid reason?

Re: In Islam, Can a woman work if she wants to?

Technically, as a wife, you need to "obey" your husband unless he's asking you to do something fundamentally wrong. So if it isn't really bothering you, you can let it go, but if it is, you can involve a third party and sort out the issue.

Re: In Islam, Can a woman work if she wants to?

an "obedient" wife/woman? Yes, I have heard of these mythical creatures. How do they look? are they in any way or form similar to pakistani girls?
