Muslim men can marry anyone from the people of the books...Christians and Jews...without converting them.
a Muslim man can NOT marry any woman from any other religion without converting the woman to Islam.
Muslim women can NOT marry anyone other than a Muslim. if she wants to marry a non-Muslim then the man has to convert to Islam.

a Muslim man can marry any Muslim, Christian or Jewish woman WITHOUT converting her to Islam...she can ecen maintain her religion and go to church or synagogue.

Would it be easier (for social purposes) if, say a Buddhist, converts to Catholic and marries a muslim man?

The marriage would not be considered valid if she isn't either a Muslim or from the people of the book.

they are not sects...there are the continuation of the religion of Abraham...Christianity, Judaism and Islam are the Abrahimic religion. Allah sent all the messenger to us with the same message of oneness of God and how to worship Him. MoHammad [saws] was the last prophet in the chain starting from Adam [a.s.].
it's simple because all three faiths are monotheistic faiths.

technically yes but practically no [no a good choice] because she is converting but not to Islam but to Christianity. why? what does she ahve against Islam?
btw, there is no conversion in Judaism. you are born a Jew. the funny thing is their progeny runs through mother. why? because Jewish men used to marry Christians. they wanted to keep their race pure. now, the dilemma is Jewish women have started marrying outside their faith. they say you can marry but your children will NOT be a Jew.

in Quran, it is said
O ye who believe! When there come to you believing women refugees, examine (and test) them: Allah knows best as to their Faith: if ye ascertain that they are Believers, then send them not back to the Unbelievers. They are not lawful (wives) for the Unbelievers, nor are the (Unbelievers) lawful (husbands) for them. But pay the Unbelievers what they have spent (on their dower), and there will be no blame on you if ye marry them on payment of their dower to them. But hold not to the guardianship of unbelieving women: ask for what ye have spent on their dowers, and let the (Unbelievers) ask for what they have spent (on the dowers of women who come over to you). Such is the command of Allah. He judges (with justice) between you. And Allah is Full of Knowledge and Wisdom. [Surah 60:10]

this verse is talking about refugees though isn't it? Not all muslim women? Also does unbelievers refer to christians and jews as well? Or more polytheists?

a lot of Islamic rulings are incident specific and then become general rulings. all scholars from all school of thought forbid a woman from marrying a non Muslim man. however, she can marry if the man converts to Islam.

KKF, don't you feel that Muslim men should avoid marrying Christians or Jews. They don't believe in our beliefs, although they believe in one God. They dont believe in Allah. No doubt they're people of the bk, but zamana has changed now.. I'm not saying we should not obey Allah, but we should avoid marrying them.
That's my personal belief. Just like how Muslims don't mind eating kosher . But I do because the Jews don't say Allah's name while doing the sacrifice of the animal.
That's my personal view. What's the point of marrying a Christian if she goes to church etc. It'll be better to convert her to Islam, if she wants to. :)
