I was there last year and had an amazing experience. I really loved the ambiance, the weather (it was spring) and the serene and calm feeling the place has about it. I think the most beautiful place is the Oia village where you can see the sunset. I stayed in Santorini for a week and actually felt sad leaving. I've been to so many places in the recent years, but I have never missed any place like I missed Santorini.
Thanks everyone. I had always wanted to go to Greece and fortunately got a chance last year in July. Went to Greece( Athens, Santorini, Mykonos,) and Turkey (Istanbul, Bodrum, Izmir). It was incredibly HOt!!!and on top of that, all the sites were packed with flocks of people.
Santorini was the best. I dont think I can ever compare a place like Santorini with anything else. You are right, Oia was just awe inspiring. its was like a romanctic dream....
I dont think i would want to move to Greece but i am definiely looking forward to visit Santorini and Mykonos some time soon. I loved Mykonos, for the distinctive atmosphere, the sunset by the Venice, the night view by the windmill at the hill top, and the pelicans.
Overall, it was an excellent trip. I would recommand to any friend who asked me. Of course, this trip would be tough for some people, but the fulfillment overwhelmed anything.
My hubby is Greek so that's how come I live here. There are really not a lot of Pakistanis and Indians here, and especially no women from our communities. I can still find my mirch masale and stuff here but other than that it's all first wave immigrants from villages etc.
So everyone just stares and stares and stares when I go out wearing traditional clothes! But they're nice people, quite similar to Pakistanis. So far no one has been racist towards me and I think that has to do with the whole Alexander the Great being in India thing, and also that Greece has an old relationship with Egypt so they don't have a problem with Muslims. At least in my experience.
Also Greek and Urdu have some common words, such as:
Thanks Tabu.
Inta, that picture is in Oia Santorini. This is the famous sunset view. One, for which hudereds of people climb up the cliffs and wait for hours to view. its ahrd to find the right place to take a picture during rush times.
Athens_Bride, when did you get married? so you must be fluent in greek now?
For people traveling to Santorini I would highly recommend going there in early May for three reasons. First, the weather is really nice as it is spring. Second, you really get to enjoy the island as there aren't too may tourists at this time (peak season june-august)without jam packed streets and too much pressure on the infrastructure. Finally, the prices are quie reasonable for everything as the peak tourist season is not in.
Quite frankly, if you really wanna know what Santorini is all about and the real beauty of the place then go there at the right time.
Also, while Oia is perhaps the most romantic place I have ever visited, its kinda hard too. There were lots of couples there for their honeymoon and its kinda disappointing if you don't have a dame around you :)
Anyways, its an excellent place to visit... best of luck!
