I personally think that the best alternative for Iraqi leaders and people right nwo will be to stage a massive defection and revolution to take back their country.
The “war” thus will take a very different approach just in containing factions and cells loyal to saddam but a military action on a massive level will not be needed which would generate civilian casualties.
I have always said, people hold the destiny of their nation in their hands..
I dont think that is going to happen, but I wish it did, There were some rumors of the defection of Tariq Aziz earlier, dont know if they are accurate.
but really, i think its in the best interest of the people. I dont know if there are any defections that are being squashed there right now, but I hope that there are.
If you were in Baghdad right now, and were an Iraqi citizen, and you knew that a huge military power is about to unleash the fiercest attack in the history of mankind on your city and your country, because a dictator who has ruled you for 20+ years refuses to give up his rule, what will you do?
Obviously you will stock up food, run for shelter, worry about your kids... but will you do anything possible to get rid of the dictator so that even if the invasion occurs, there is not so much risk of losing so many innocent lives? What will you be discussing with your friends and neighbors are this point? I am sure "annoyed" and "mad" are mild terms for them.
For that matter, I am curious as to what will be going on in the minds of top Iraqi generals and the inner circle of Saddam's cabinet. They know, better than us, what are their chances against US. They practically are staring at death or a life of hide-and-seek. What will they be thinking right now?
A group of 17 Iraqis have already surrendered. The Tariq Aziz story turned out to be false but maybe we will see something happen in the inner circle as the deadline draws near. British Bombers are due to arrive in Iraq in 5 hours.
I think regular military folks will surrender in droves, the head honchos probably will not because they have been saddam's cohorts. They fear US as well as their own people, so I dont expect a major revolt among the top brass, some may, but not a huge revolt for this very reason.
but hey, i will be glad if i am wrong and thereis a successful overthrow.

In WWII, German generals in the regular army (Wehrmacht) were treated differently than SS leaders. I think Saddam's inner circle and leaders of the elite Republican Guard would be dealt with harshly. Regular army guys (even generals if such things exist in Iraq) would probably be OK.
Fraudz…too late for a revolution, but defections, by all means. Do you think that there is some hope that some of the members on Gupshup will switch sides once the butcher is killed? or do you think that they will always find some other reason to hate America? My guess the latter.
NY dunno man its never too late for a revolution.
as far as those who dislike america, I suppose they will quickly move to the side which US designates its next target.
