Imran is correct on somethings related to MQM but he utterly laughable on his stance on Talib threat.
It is strange that Hamid Mir did not challenge Imran's bogus stance.
Talib threat has been around for a long time BEFORE 9/11.
Sufi Mohammad's TNSM has been challenging the writ of the state since the 1990s. Pak army planned a full scale assault on swat long time before 9/11. It only paused because the army didn't want 100,000 of IDPs. They kept on making deals in the hopes of containing the Talibs.
For 20 f'ing years we as Pakistani nation made deals with TNSM and similar outfits? Why because the option of using the force should always be the very last option.
So Imran is at least an ignoromous of nth degree (if not downright supporter of Talibs).
Not only in Swat, but in Punjab and Karachi the extremist Islamists have been murdering and suicide bombing for a long time before 9/11.

Wine you are obviously drunk. A background in the sciences does not mean he is an intellectual in the field of advanced political analysis and security dynamics. What his extremely impressive background in science means is that he is an intellectual in matters of science and physics. Not politics or geo-political strategy.

It is a pity that instead of focusing on what Dr. Hoodbhoy is saying specially his arguments against Imran Khan’s viewpoint we are trying to find personal flaws in Dr. Hoodbhoy. Some people are even suggesting that Doctor is probably an atheist therefore whatever he says is not worthy of any attention. Why don’t we talk about what the doctor is saying instead of questioning his professional expertise andif he is saying something illogical we should try to counter his arguments with more logical arguments of our own.

This refers to a rather long – but short on substance – rejoinder by the PTI printed in your newspaper on May 19 by Omar Sarfaraz Cheema, central information secretary of the PTI.** The rejoinder itself is reflective of a mindset and thought process that seems to be based on one individual’s irrational solutions to the ongoing problem of terrorism. It is astonishing to watch and listen to the arguments of the PTI leader or even Shireen Mazari.**
As for Mr Cheema’s rejoinder, the similarity presented between 1971 and the current militancy is misplaced. The 1971 debacle was political in substance and was the result of a strong reaction of an entire ethnically similar population of a land which was not contiguous with West Pakistan and separated by over 2,000 miles of a hostile country. The current situation where there is insurgency, militancy and terrorism in parts of NWFP cannot be equated with the East Pakistan situation.
The PTI’s advocacy for pursuing a policy of engagement and dialogue with terrorists to resolve the problem is against the principles of sovereignty, statehood, the constitution and indeed against common sense. In this context one can take a leaf from Sri Lanka where deals and agreements and talks (brokered by the UN and Norway) between the government and the LTTE led to nowhere. And ultimately it was the determined and relentless military drive by the brave Sri Lankan armed forces which eliminated the terrorist insurgency and even removed the LTTE chief for good. It is sincerely hoped that the armed forces of Pakistan will take a lesson from the Sri Lankan experience and emulate the war efforts of the Sri Lankan armed forces by eliminating the Taliban and Al Qaeda murders.

In his rejoinder Omar Sarfraz Cheema of the PTI has asked Shafqat Mahmood to visit FATA and Swat. I should tell Mr Cheema that if either of them were to visit Swat they would hear that the military operation should have been launched the day the first Swati was killed by these barbarians. They will hear that after each deal the barbarians got stronger and expanded their reign of terror. If the PTI is so sincere to the cause of the Swatis, he should perhaps move there and see what life is like there because of the militancy.

No it means he is not an intellectual on political matters. It means he doesn't have the necessary expertise to be considered an expert. It means his views are not of a higher quality than those of an average person on the street.

My comments are valid regardless if its a video between Churchill and JFK. Just because you have a masters from MIT that does not make you an expert or an intellectual when it comes to strategic studies, geo-politics or real politik.
The man while a brilliant scientist is not an expert or an intellectual on politics. He doesn't have the necessary academic/profession or educational background to be called such.
