The Pakistan opposition politician, Imran Khan, has been released from prison where he has been held under anti-terrorism laws, his party says.
The former cricketer was arrested by police last week after attending a protest at Punjab University in Lahore.
On Monday, Mr Khan began a hunger strike in protest at his detention.
He is demanding the restoration of the constitution and the reinstatement of supreme court judges who were sacked after emergency rule was declared.
“He has been released from Dera Ghazi Khan jail [in southern Punjab province],” Omar Cheema, a senior leader of Mr Khan’s Tehrik-i-Insaf party, told the BBC.
Mr Khan’s release comes a day after Pakistani authorities released more than 3,000 people who were detained under emergency regulations imposed by President Pervez Musharraf on 3 November. A spokesman for the interior ministry said many others would be released soon.
Though it is good news that he has been released, now someone please tell me if the charges against him are dropped or rejected by court? was any due process followed at all?
There were too many demonstrations outside the jail in lahore and the public in lahore was all heated up and pro Imran therefore they moved him where they could avoid too much resentment from the public.
I welcome this news. Wish him all the best in his future endeavours. Hope Khan Saab is in good health despite his hunger strike. Hope he now takes care of the IJT students who roughed him up and the jaahil police officers who beat his sisters and misbehaved with them. We cannot allow such jihaalat and beghairati to go unpunished.
Imran Khan was with BBC, on the phone: I’m still in the prison but not a prisoner anymore. I was treated well by the staff andeveryone and they all knew I wasn’t meant in the jail so they all treated me well. (comments on jamat-e-islami incident) It was a strategy planned by the government, there were government agents inside the university. He says that he was about to be severely beaten up by the Jamat-e-Islami students. Newscaster question about getting beaten up during the prison? And Imran Khan says “no he was not beaten inside the prison, he was treated very well”. The elections will be the biggest fraud that is going to take place under the name of democracy. He’s going to rig the elections, the emergency rule is still there. The election will be a smoke screen for him to get back into power. I think all those political parties who believe in genuine democracy should boycott these elections because the problems of Pakistan will multiply after these elections. <--------these are his words.
so there’s no uproar, students being active like they are, wouldn’t wanna see them all end up outside jail demanding he be free …so the farther the better i guess
