abbay nikame.... tu uss waqat assmaoon pay tha when he announced his retirement....probably you were a kid when he played his last test.... every one knew that this was his last test ( banglore 1987. AS USUAL Pakistan won that test match).
OK here is my take on this issue. If every one knows that this is the last test match of a player then it means that he is retiring gracefully no matter how long he extended his retirement. Gavasker definitely falls under this category and retired gracefully with a masterful last innings. I do not remember muddassar nazar though.....Mushtaq muhammad, hanif muhammad, sadiq muhammad, Zaheer Abbas, Miandad, wasim, waqar, saeed, mohsin khan, majid khan, amir sohial, qadar sub zaleeell howay.....though I shud be fair to zaheer Abbas. Great Zaheer abbas announced his 1984 test series against sri lanka to be his last series and the third test match at Karachi was supposed to be his last test match. And every one knew about it. However after second test match at sialkot, zaheer haAd some serious problems with imran khan and he announced his retirement immediately and refused to take part in the third test match. There was a rumor that imran did not want zaheer to play the third test match and zaheer did his face saving by announcing his retirement after second test match.
Probably the most humiliating situation was for miandad, wasim and waqar. Poor miandad was forced to play side matches to show his match fitness...waqar and wasim was simply dropped and were never considered for selection again and they had no choice but to retire. I really feel sorry for 2 WS…they deserved much better. Not to mention that we probably never going to have fast bowlers like them again. We are realizing it now after they are gone.
Now here are few exceptions....asif iqabal announced his retirement immediately after a humiliating defeat in 1978 Indian tour...he was skipper then....but he did retire gracefully because he announced his retirement himself even though he was forced by many to continue his career as a player.....Wasim Bari did retire gracefully......And of course, King Khan…But Khan has a different caliber.. No to mention that he was actually forced by president of Pakistan Zia ul Haq in 1987 ( after 1987 world cup imran retired from international cricket) to revoke his retirement decision and lead the team again which imran accepted.
