A female might be able to shed some more light for you on that one, but I'll try. Sometimes there are risks to mother's health either before the child is born or at birth. If doctors save the child, they lose the mother. But if they save the mother, they lose the child because they have to abort it. Then they ask the family who do they want to save and then depending on the answer, one is saved and one cannot be saved in some cases. You might find better answers if you google this topic because I am sure there are thousands of articles written on it. Guppies here may not be able to give you all that what you can get from the web as it is for a paper, not for general knowledge. You wanna be accurate and be able to cite when writing a paper.
