In case of rape. And that too before the child begins to breath and the heart starts to beat. Islamically, there's a certain time (in days or months) but that basically says the same thing that before the life is put into the child, you can have an abortion but as soon as it becomes a life, you can't take it away.
Another time you can have an abortion is when there's danger to mother's life. In order to save the mother, some people choose to have abortion.
These 2 are my opinions and think that's only when an abortion is ok. I can't think of anymore.

Here are a few that will be food for thought...
WHen a baby dies in utero. In many cases, it can remain in there for weeks and weeks without intervention.
How about a baby with genetic abnormalities? Some are so severe that the baby would have a short painful life. Or die shortly after birth. Or be born with no hope of a normal life. Or have parents who cannot care for a disabled child.

A female might be able to shed some more light for you on that one, but I'll try. Sometimes there are risks to mother's health either before the child is born or at birth. If doctors save the child, they lose the mother. But if they save the mother, they lose the child because they have to abort it. Then they ask the family who do they want to save and then depending on the answer, one is saved and one cannot be saved in some cases. You might find better answers if you google this topic because I am sure there are thousands of articles written on it. Guppies here may not be able to give you all that what you can get from the web as it is for a paper, not for general knowledge. You wanna be accurate and be able to cite when writing a paper. To start off, check out www.webmd.com and you might find something there.

^ I am sorry but I can't resist because I was going to mention the same things in my first post but I didn't and here's the reason.
That couple is STUPID who would have sex without planning whether they want a child or not and then realize you know what, we don't want a child. Lets have an abortion. Same goes for if they are too young to have a baby. Where was their goddamn brain when they were enjoying the 2 minutes? Couldn't they think of that at that time that we are too young to have intercourse, what'll happen if we do and not use protection? In THESE 2 particular case, I see no reason to have an abortion because this was their utter stupidity and no one else should suffer because of that.
It would be a different scnerio if the girl was young and was raped or if they did use protection and all they tried their best not to have a child but it still happened. Yeah, in that situation it's understandable but from your post, it sounded like they were just fooling around and then changed their mind that we are not ready yet. Sorry if I took it wrong.

it has been a very controversial issue since ages....some ppl say it should be ok to abort the child and to some ppl its not ok to do so.....well, i would agree with shikra and mamaof3...and i will disagree with the ones what just want to abort the child without any solid reason.

I once did a research paper on abortion in college.....all you have to do is search it a little on yahoo or google....you'll find TONS of info on both sides.
If this is for a college class, don't you think it's best that you actually do the work(research it yourself), find out the good reasons to support abortion yourself instead of asking us for the answers?

Valid point Neera......but one could also argue that if he is responsible enough to be having a sexual relationship then he should be responsible enough to take on the responsibilty of it's consequences.

There are many reasons behind the Legaliztion of Abortion and all of them are opinions. I would suggest you to do a complete and comprehensive research on it and give your best opinion because in the end it will be right. Most of the people blame society or couples for not using protection and say 'Why have sex in first place?' or 'Why didn't you use protection?' that's not the time to talk about it when someone is pregnant. The time is to ask the girl what she thinks about it? All in all, I believe it should be on the table as it, in the end, gives women a choice.

When I was in high school and later, I was verypro-choice. NOT pro-abortion, as many people wrongly assume pro-choicers to be. Pro-choice means that every woman has a right to decide what to do with her unborn baby without interference from politicians telling her what to do wiht her own body. It's a tough decision to make, to abort or not and I hope and pray I or anyone I know ever has to go through it. But lately, reading so much about how hard it is for others to concieve, people's fertility troubles, and wanting to have kids of my own more than ever, I'm not so sure.
I think abortion should definitely be allowed in the two common cases stated above, rape/incest and if there are medical complications with the mother or fetus. Otherwise, i think its just a quick fix for being sexually irresponsible. Sexual abstinence/chastity is seen as such a strange thing in our society now, staying a virgin til marriage makes you a paindu or frigid or something. Maybe its a double standard on my part but it doens't even shock me anymore that Muslims act the same as non-Muslims in ignoring warnings to stay away from pre/extra marital sex.
