i do too.
i asked a student of mine, to stop sending me texts queries from her blackberry, because it will be a nuance to first decode her half rude message and without her name at the end. so when i my under grad class, i asked all, without calling out on her, that please do not send me any messages from berries or texts from tmails.
her condescending remark was: may be it is a cultural thing with you!
i did not say anything then. a couple of more rude things she did.
then i decided to call her out and see me after class.
& i told her that yes, it is a cultural thing with me, because i am cultured.
that i would like her to follow the policy of the coll to write emails only by the coll assigned email and that i will appreciate that she enables herself to be respected by me, just like any student.
self entitled arrgance got better of her. she was still incapable of saying sorry to me.
these kind of instances, in academia indicate that the racism is darn deep & your prestige as well as hard work, wont always earn you reasonable respect.
that you are after all dealing with a serve-me mind, in many instances.
so yes, racism must be dealt with, firmly and clearly, when it surfaces.

dush, maybe she wasn't being racist. Here's what I think. Its just like any other kid telling their parents they are from a different league because they don't like the new short/brief acronym filled test msging culture of the teens of today.
