Impacts of Floods

What has been the long term and short term impact of floods? Have food prices risen? Has any particular food commodity risen more than others? Is more food being imported into Pakistan?

What about travel and infrastructure - have the damaged sections of the motorway been rebuilt or in the process of being rebuilt?

Have temporary water bodies been created? Are any fields or other land which was dry now under water?

Re: Impacts of Floods

Great questions we need to keep this isue going.

Infrastructure in many areas needs rebuilding altogether which could take a long time.

Since much of Punjab breadbasket was affeccted wheat and rice stocks, both a staple product, have fallen sharply… theres allready a global shortage this new shortage in Pakistan could lead to an almost famine for many poorer people.

The waters have receded in the North but much of the southern part of the country still resembles an inland sea in many places.

Theres many other things i would like to list and go through in much more detail and i will do soon… right now i’m on break but i’llpost more on this later.

C’mon people this is our homeland we need to think of our Motherland above all else right now :jhanda:

Re: Impacts of Floods

Agreed. This is also an opportunity..we can build new & modern infra-structure..can provide much needed employement for the poor.

Disagree! The heavily affected areas are in KP and sindh. Less than 20% of the fertile land is affected in punjab..however..heaviest loss was in cotton crop.

As far as inflation is concerened:

  • the core inflation is around 10-11 %..the SB raised the interest rate to 13.5% recently
  • Food inflation is much higher and varies quite a bit. The price of sugar and atta almost doubled after the flood in part due to loss in crop because of flood & loss of infra-structure (causing disruption in transportation of food stuff), ramadan(food price always goes up >20% every year during festivity) and the inter-national wheat price shooting up due to heat wave in russia.
  • Hopefully the price of everyday food item will come down in few months.

Re: Impacts of Floods

If so much area is under water still would fish farms become a suitable alternative?

I may visit Pakistan during the winter and visit all 4 provinces. I think some people are still camped at Makli right?
