I am wondering these days as to why the impact of UP is so much on Pakistan. About 75 % of Pakistan’s follow deobandi or barelvi schools of thought and both Bareilly and Deoband are based in UP. Pakistan’s national language is Urdu which is again thought to be based in UP. Maybe the language makes sense, as that was the language of the early ruling elite and maybe the languages selected which did not belong to the provinces forming Pakistan so as to avoid conflict due to language although it was still contested by east Pakistan.
Re: impact of UP on modern Pakistan
As far as following Deobandi and Barelvi Islam is concerned, wasn’t this followed in existing areas of Pakistan before partition? ![]()
Re: impact of UP on modern Pakistan
It was, but still the main centers were in UP.
Re: impact of UP on modern Pakistan
Its because ideologies of people like Imam Raza Barelvi matched the ideologies of people here. Besides these two major school of thoughts, Shia Islam (via Iran) also impacted religious ideologies of people of these areas.
Re: impact of UP on modern Pakistan
Yes the majority still adheres to the two main schools of thought. Why were these madrassas based in UP although the majority of Muslims have always been in other areas of the subcontinent. UP was and still is a minority Muslim province.
Re: impact of UP on modern Pakistan
UP was and still is a minority Muslim province.
Well, one thing is that it may be a minority province in percentage but in numbers, its Muslim population must have been quite large. BTW, UP does not stand for the present day "Uttar Pradesh". During British rule, UP stood for "United Provinces".
Re: impact of UP on modern Pakistan
^ what were those united provinces?
Re: impact of UP on modern Pakistan
United Province of Rohail Khund and Awadh! These were the two states before the arrival of the British who merged them under UP.
Re: impact of UP on modern Pakistan
Actually UP was the cultural hub of India and Muslims of India followed UP in most fields. It was hub of poetry most popular those days and Dehli was also counted with UP so it was linked to Muslim rulers also. The most important role was of Aligarh University . The students of Aligarh college were the most prominent people in Muslims of India . They made the Pakistan and their big lot was in government jobs too and most of them opted Pakistan in 1947 .
Re: impact of UP on modern Pakistan
I think Urdu is not new language at the time of British India partition, I believe it was Hindustani *boli *and widely understood in present day Pakistan. Partition just renamed it to Urdu.
BTW, Punjabi population is major part of current Pakistan and Urdu was not foreign to them.
Now, if we look at Brelvi and Deobandi school of thougths, you will clearly see Hazrat Raza Khan Brelvi establish it in 18th centuries, while Deobandi school/*madrasa *also founded in 18th century. In case of Deobandi school, they claim Shah Waliullah's teaching and follow his interpretation and most famously Taqwiatul Eman is most fundamental book on believe system.
That is the reason both schools are popular in Pakistan.
