Hey everyone
What are your thoughts of Facebook and its impact on individuals not being able to function normally. Does seeing someone’s achievements or the fact they are friends with certain people or the fact that they post pics of family, trips or materialistic things get to you? I have been off the Facebook grid since finishing grad school in 2009 but I recently went on to check on a friend and within 10 minutes I am going through person after person and realizing…where am I in life? how come this person is friends with so and so? I think Facebook is amazing but it also ruins peoples lives. Is that an overstatement?
Re: Impact of Facebook on your life
It depends on how much you allow it to get to you.
Re: Impact of Facebook on your life
Facebook sucks! I stopped posting and visiting much. All my friends are married and what not and stable with jobs etc., while I am accumulating loans! But grass is always greener on the other side. So I try not to let it get to me.
Re: Impact of Facebook on your life
aww soon you’ll be making the big bucks!
OP I seldom go on it and primarily have family and a handful of very close friends so that might be why it doesn’t really bother me much… I can see the situation being different for someone who has every single acquaintance from high-school on there Facebook… with all of them spending their time navel gazing and bragging about their lives.
Re: Impact of Facebook on your life
Same here. I have temporarily deactivated my FB. It got overwhelming sometimes.
Re: Impact of Facebook on your life
It pushes me to do better and achieve more than them. I got a competitive streak in me, even before i was old enough to use the internet i always used size up with my friends and cousins, the competition should drive you to do better.
Re: Impact of Facebook on your life
Dude you’re gonna be earning a lot more than them real soon, all that debt will be gone in a couple years lol.
Re: Impact of Facebook on your life
I think it’s not just Facebook, but snapchat and Instagram too. Though I haven’t used snapchat and Instagram enough to know how exactly it effects a person, but I feel it’ll be similar to Facebook. Facebook is a place where people are trying to preserve the facade of a perfect life.
Re: Impact of Facebook on your life
Facebook used to be cool but now it’s filled with uncles/ aunties and old people.
Most young people are on instagram/snapchat and other platforms.
Anyways, I think it doesn’t have to be a social media platform that ruins lives. It mostly comes from insecurity within and not being happy with what we have. Also, tendency to snoop around not only wastes time but also takes us down memory lanes that sometimes are best unexplored. Everyone has their own story and struggles. People put their best moments on social media and we can never tell how miserable or difficult their life actually is which causes us to have unreal expectations of life, relationships, etc.
Re: Impact of Facebook on your life
Yes I know! I am already getting like multiple job offers in the mail with a stipend if I sign with them right now! mA. Can’t wait till all this BS is over !
I love SnapChat. I most use it with my nieces and nephews, they love making faces and what not!
Re: Impact of Facebook on your life
I’m personally not in favor of competing with others. In my opinion, if I’m competitive, I’ll never be satisfied because there’ll always be someone better than me in something. Moreover, competition is feeling happy that the 50 others you left behind are in a worse state than you. I don’t see love for humans in it.
The best competition is competing with oneself.
Re: Impact of Facebook on your life
There will always be someone above you whether that be financial, physical and/or socially and then there will be people below you. I agree with LP, compete with yourself so you bring out the best of yourself and you in turn realize your true potential. I think everyone has potential in different fields we just need to tap into that potential and sadly some people die not realizing and utilizing it.
Pisiform-I can relate with your student loan debt but hang in there…If you can work 2 jobs and pay it off. It will haunt you if you postpone it or pay only the interest/bare minimum. Student loans are one type of loan the government will aggressively collect on and not forgive even if you declare bankruptcy, both in the US and Canada.
Re: Impact of Facebook on your life
I downloaded SnapChat and followed a few celebrities (Other than two cousins, nobody uses SnapChat in my family) . After a few days I was like, what the hell are you doing LP and I uninstalled it.
