Immortality

If humans were somehow able to achieve immortality, would you choose to live forever? Why or why not?

If we are destined to die at a set date and time, wouldn’t Allah swt make sure it happens despite any scientific advances?

Re: Immortality

I wouldnt choose to live forever. Because unless they are able to stop humans from aeging, then why would you wanna live a terribly old life, you cannot do anything on your own and bla.

and answer to second question, yes I believe it will.

Re: Immortality

its destined but its not fixed. That means that the date is in Allah's hand but he can change it.

Re: Immortality

So when Allah mian decides on Lailatul Qadr which one of us is going to die that year, that is not final?

Re: Immortality

Our souls are already immortal?

Re: Immortality

If immortality accompanies good health also , yes I would like to , but if it accompanies , no power in limbs , memory loss , bad temper to the point where others pray for my demise so that they and I could get out of my misery then no.

The answer to second question is that if Allah(SWT) destined some people to dies on the day of judgement then humans can achieve immortality , this means the fate of immortal will be to die on the day of judgement . No ?

Re: Immortality

If it's a generally happy life, then yes, I'd like immortality.

Re: Immortality

That is what I was saying, the date is not fixed till that particular year.

BTW, I thought is Shab-e-Baraat and not Qadar when the fate is decided. I might be wrong.

Re: Immortality

That's what I thought too....

Re: Immortality

Yep , shab a qadar key raat ko Quran utra tha.

Re: Immortality

Thank you for the correction :flowers:

Re: Immortality

so if the date is decided, why do believers still go to doctors and such?

Re: Immortality

^ cos it hurts? Also, we're not very good at subservient acceptance of things, it goes against our survival instinct.
Not that I'm convinced of it being decided, just saying.

Re: Immortality

For guppies who are looking for information on this, I’d recommend watching series of program called “Deen Dialogue”. I dont remember the episode but around a month ago they had discussion on this topic and it was very insightful.

Re: Immortality

and not because they believe it could prolong their life? the whole bit about drugs and medical procedures saving lives etc..

interesting point though - about it going against survival instinct.. one'd think survival instinct would be another unnecessary thing in a world where time of death is predetermined.

Re: Immortality

No way! as long as I can live long enough to see my son grow up and maybe see some grand children I will be happy to go when I can no longer wipe my own bum and feed myself.

Re: Immortality

ewwwww. I mean I just hope that these are two different and unrelated incidents/

Re: Immortality

Queer, we live on planet earth (not in heaven) where all sorts of ugliness (disease, accidents) happens. Perhaps Allah swt has decided that I will die tomorrow but He also took into account the free will He granted to us humans. I could get shot today by someone, I could fall, I could be in a car crash etc etc. Then what? I shouldn't get treatment because I'm going to die tomorrow anyway? Drugs and medical procedures don't save the ones who ought to die that day but they do heal the sick. That's all medical care is, healing the sick. Life and death is not in any doctor's hands.

Re: Immortality

bbq,

since you know your drugs well - would you say penicillin has saved lives? or just saved those that weren't chosen to die?

Re: Immortality

Not in this world.

Of course. If He decides for someone to die, they will regardless of any apparent means they may have to prevent it.
