Does anyone know any developments about the IMAX cinema being built in lahore along with a state-of-the-art shopping mall and ice skating rink?
Ok I found the info :D
The city’s first IMAX cinema’s site has been changed from Gaddafi Stadium to Mini Market on MM Alam Road
Doongi Ground, also known as St Mary’s School Ground, covers 40 kanals. The project will house one big IMAX cinema, a bowling alley, a shopping mall and a restaurant, the project would cost Rs 400 million and would house six theaters , restaurants, shopping malls, a skating rink, a science centre and other attractions.
There are 270 IMAX cinemas in the world, but the one planned in Lahore will be Pakistan’s first. The Parks and Horticulture Authority will furnish landscaping of the project. An IMAX theatre screen is three times larger than the standard for cinemas that use 70 millimetre high-resolution screens. The IMAX cinema’s uncompressed digital wrap-around sound has a patented six-channel speaker system. A six Screen IMAX would be unique in South Asia.
What kind of movies are they going to show on IMAX? Because not all the movies are made for IMAX. Here in States majority of the films they show on IMAX are documentaries. How many Pakistanis are going to watch documentaries? How much it’s going to cost? May 700 rupees to watch a film and 1000 rupees to an hour skating? It will create more gap between rich and poor. Sorry if I may sound like a downer, but the more westerners we are becoming by building fancy malls and restaurants, the middle class and poor people of our society are going to suffer more with inferiority complex.
No Only 2 screens are IMAX the rest are the normal big screens. Well there are limited number of movies out for IMAX but it might play a good role for screening educational movies for kids and families plus there is gonna be a sciene musuem over there as well which would be free!!. so I think thats a good step forward and I am really lookin forward to seein the city again :)
As far as the gap between poor and rich is concerend.. Well the mall and related activities are aimed for middle class tabqa which make s aheft population of the city and I dont think creating a mall would create an inferiority complex in poor class. You live in states like I do and we all go to movies and theaters here dont we? whats wrong if there one back home where people can go for shopping ? This would boost the consumer market in genral in a developing country like ours
so cheer up man ! Its a big deal for Pakistan and for our region
the middle class can go work in the mall.. it'll create jobs..
and btw who do you think eats at the fancy restaurants on MM Alam road today?? it's certainly not the middle class paying Rs. 300 for a burger..

No dude, I am happy for you them, but I have to disagree with you on one thing. In America everyone can afford to shop at mall. Watch $10 movie at IMAX. But honestly tell me how many people in Pakistan are going to buy 2400 rupees gap jeans from the mall or spent 700 rupees to watch a movie? All the Malls I have seen so far in Pakistan are aimed towards rich people. Forget poor not even people from middle class can even think about shopping there. You are not being quite realistic here when you are comparing America and Pakistan. We have a huge physiological and cultural gap between the rich and poor and it is increasing day by day.

so true dude. I get so flustered when pakis make stupid downer comments when we build malls and high rise apartments. High rise apartments save so much space and that is vital in a rapidly increasing country, population wise, like pakistan. They are smart investments. And as far as malls are concerned, remember this. They had to have labors to make those malls. That's providing the poors with jobs. New businesses grow around the malls. Poors work in maintaining the malls. The whole set of jobs for poors gets created around a mall that we don't see in the surface. And this may sound cruel. But should we punish the middle and upper class of pakistan just because the poors of the country. Building malls and high rise apartments have never killed a poor person.
I kinda agree, and lets hope ppl support it, and it doesnt turn out to be another failed business venture! I love IMAX!
