I really don't know where we are headed as nation or country or even Muslims. I am sure there must have been some provoking on part who pasted those posters on their shop. Even if provoked, it was stupid of the molvi to 'tear it apart then trample over it'.

These things are happening in "rural" areas so not sure if it is really a 'conspiracy' to stir up debates on the law while issue is already hot.

I don't think you can blame the judge here. Its the law. Judges job is sentence people according whatever statutory law says.

This is a good thing. The more baseless and stupid cases are made, the more likely people will realize what a pointless law this actually is.

molvi sahab was not supposed to trample the poster under his feet even if he is not for mehfil-e-milad, if what Dawn says is true. if he did that, it was not a clever move on his part.

TLK i agree with you that now some people will use it to score some points against other sects, but i don't agree that its the fault of the judge. the judge just gave the ruling as per law. and CJ does not need to take any somoto against a ruling which is correct as per law, however, the convicted molvi sahan and his son should approach high court if they think they did not do any wrong.

if he again found guilty, the people who pasted the poster on his shop should also get some kind of punishment for provoking him and sticking the poster on his shop knowing his beliefs...

the law should remain, but all we need is to define what exactly blasphemy is.

islam dont teach idol worshiping, infect it rejects that. all this acts are worse than idol worshiping.

these people have made muhammad a god.

i dont get blasphemy laws, how can a tiny human defame god when god is the ever powerful creator.
it seems now that blasphemy laws are holier than quran itself.

i dont agree with aasia biwi's jail sentence and i dont agree with these mullah's jail sentence either.
like someone said , general zia's children have come of age.

Callous beheading of non-muslims started by the wahabi sect in Egypt in the early 80's has now spread all over the world. It has been well overtaken by the deobandies here in Pakistan and Afghanistan with
scores of shias and sunnies massacred by them. Do not forget the hanging of a Pir in KP recently by these people.

It was an anti-terrorism court, and I dont know how this case falls in the category of terrorism. Plus, the judge is supposed to make a judgement as well, before passing a sentence. Seems like the judge did not bother to get any investigation done into whether any of the accusers had even seem these guys rip up the poster and 'trample' it.
I feel that they probably posted the poster, and left, and when they returned at another time, they found it missing. So they just went ahead and filed a complaint.

While there is some merit to the blasphemy law, the way it is used in Pakistan is just unbelievable.

The BBC Story on this provides some more details.

  1. It appears that the imam was Deobandi, and is being targetted by barelvis in his community using this law.
  2. Relevant to some of the points made in this thread, even the BBC now describes Barelvis as “Experts say the Barelvi school, although considered moderate, promotes a cult following of the Prophet Muhammad.” (pbuh)
  3. The life sentence handed down to the imam is the first ever given for blasphemy in Pakistan, despite the fact that the law states that death is the mandatory punishment for blasphemy.

As per many news papers it was just because Imam was the follower of different Firqa than the locals. Imam's lawyers are also saying the same thing. This law has just become a tool to settle score now.

I am so afraid to go to Pakistan now, you never know that you throw a news paper in dustbin and there is a name of Muhammad (PBUH) in the paper and you get death sentence for this...
