Imaam Abu Hanifa (Reh.A) & the limits of logic

Once rumours were spread about Imam Abu Hanifa (rahmatullahi alayh) that he has made changes in Deen by giving preference to his own reason and intelligence over the Quran and Hadith.

This propaganda also reached Hazrat Muhammad Baaqir (rahmatullahi alayh). Hazrat Muhammad Baaqir (rahmatullahi alayh) was a Sayyid (a descendant of Rasulullah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) since he was the grandson of Hazrat Husain (Radiyallahu Anhu).

When Hazrat Baaqir (rahmatullahi alayh) met Imam Abu Hanifa (rahmatullahi alayh) in Madinah Munawwarah, he questioned him regarding this, saying: “What is this that I have heard, that you have abandoned and altered the Deen of my Grandfather (referring to the Deen of Rasulullah Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) giving preference to your own logic and reasoning over the Quran and Hadith?

Imam Abu Hanifa (rahmatullahi alayh) replied by posing the following questions:

Firstly, Imaam Abu Hanifa (rahmatullahi alayh) asked: “Between men and women, who is the weaker party?”
Hazrat Baaqir (rahmatullahi alayh) replied: “Women.”

Imam Abu Hanifa (rahmatullahi alayh) then asked: “As inheritance, how much does a man receive in comparison to the woman?”
Hazrat Baaqir (rahmatullahi alayh): “The man gets double the share of the woman”

Imam Abu Hanifa (rahmatullahi alayh) then said: “Had I given preference to my own logic over the Quran and Hadith, I would have given the woman double the share of the man whereas I don’t say this”

Thereafter Imam Abu Hanifa (rahmatullahi alayh) asked: “Which act of worship is superior, Salaah or Saum (fasting)?
Hazrat Baaqir (rahmatullahi alayh) replied: “Salaah.”

Imam Abu Hanifa (rahmatullahi alayh) asked further: “When a woman due to menstruation misses Salaah as well as Saum, then which one does she have to make Qaza ?”
Hazrat Baaqir (rahmatullahi alayh): “Only Saum.”
Imam Abu Hanifa (rahmatullahi alayh) declared: “Had I followed my own reasoning against the Quran and Hadith then I would have told her to make Qaza of the Salaah and not the Saum.”

Imaam Abu Hanifa (rahmatullahi alayh) then asked a third question: “Which liquid is more impure, urine or semen?
Hazrat Baaqir (rahmatullahi alayh): “Urine.”

Imam Abu Hanifa (rahmatullahi alayh) asked: “When does Ghusl become compulsory on a person, on the passing out of urine or on the passing out of semen?”
Hazrat Baaqir (rahmatullahi alayh): “On the passing out of semen.”

Upon this Imam Abu Hanifa (rahmatullahi alayh) said: “Had I preferred my own logic over the Quran and Hadith then I would have made ghusl compulsory after passing urine and wuzu compulsory after semen.”

On hearing this Hazrat Baaqir (rahmatullahi alayh) stood up, hugged Imam Abu Hanifa (rahmatullahi alayh) kissed him on his forehead and was delighted to hear that all those rumours were false and baseless. (Kamaalaat-e-Imam Abu Hanifa, pg.348)

**Lesson: **The sign of a true believer is that he submits himself entirely before Allah and his Rasool (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) and he has absolutely no reservation with regards to any injunction of Deen though it may seem contrary to his reasoning and intellect.

We also understand that the Fuqahaa (jurist) do not “make” their own Deen. Their specialization lied in extracting and codifying the rulings found in the Quran and Sunnah.

Re: Imaam Abu Hanifa (Reh.A) & the limits of logic

Is this a response to the previous thread of "Why worship?"?

It still doesn't answer the question. Your response is a good way to justify "having no justification".

How does blindly following certain actions make sense?

Re: Imaam Abu Hanifa (Reh.A) & the limits of logic

It is a spinoff of the story where Abu Hanifa was questioned for his usage of qiyaas in deriving religious rulings. Try if you can find the text and the date of the text this is quoted from the date of the text in which it's quoted, and who compiled that text. It's abundantly clear that the Imams of the Ahl al-Bayt strongly criticized the usage of qiyaas and its growing prominence amongst jurists. It is unlikely that Abu Hanifa, founder of the practice, would get such a praise. With the stature of Imam Mohammad al Baqir there is no way Abu Hanifa could have answered him in this way given the later studied under the son of Imam al Baqir and acknowledging himself that he was not even near the same levelof guidance of his son and student, Imam as Sadiq.

Re: Imaam Abu Hanifa (Reh.A) & the limits of logic

Well, that pretty much establishes the authenticity of this “story”, I must say.
I wonder if people even realize how stupid one looks like when he recommends ignorance over knowledge.
For the knowledge of people who like to live in ignorance, their is a car invented which actually runs on sawab! Now don’t anyone dare question this car.

Search ‘sawab car’ on YouTube.

(BTW) this news about sawab car is at least more authentic than the story cited by the original poster, because I at least give the source of this story.

Re: Imaam Abu Hanifa (Reh.A) & the limits of logic

Well, it was actually mentioned there. (Kamaalaat-e-Imam Abu Hanifa, pg.348)

Re: Imaam Abu Hanifa (Reh.A) & the limits of logic

Peace khoji

Actually I can confirm that I have also seen this narration.

Another lesson in this account is that we should not believe rumours rather we should go to said people ... And find out what it is they are saying ...

Re: Imaam Abu Hanifa (Reh.A) & the limits of logic

Imam-e-Azam Numan b Thabit Al-Kufi ( R.A) studied directly under some Sahaba ( like Abu Tufayl) and Tabaeen ( like AL-Qama b Qays) one of them happened to be Jafar As-Sadiq
He was not ENTIRELY schooled by As-Saqid as u tend to Imply
