In the past few years, with the advent of all kinds of issues with Windows and such I’ve been wanting to start using Linux. Recently I’ve heard a lot of good things about the new Mac OS. So now I’m considering getting a Mac which would give me Linux as well.
I would probably replace my Sony Vaio with a Powerbook. I started looking around and they are pretty much the same price as the Windows laptops. The main issue would be software compatibility. But then with Linux there’s tons of freeware out there.
Anywho, so anyone have any opinions on this through process. I don’t want to start up another Mac/PC war, just trying to justify spending the odd $1500.

I am with you tofibaba, I like mac security wise and also for its other features, so what if its lil expensive. But the only prob is mac was not created to serve the same purpose as ibm. Its for mostly graphical use, my bro has the G4 notebook, I drool over it. But its his baby and beside his work is more intesive than mine, so I don’t bother to touch it. However, I have been thinking about switching to linux too. I have had several problems with win, that I feel like kicking my comp

hmmm … MAC does seem like a good option … certainly does. Anyone seen the latest iMac G5? Its a beauty :love: … and such a space saver … you guys would be amazed …

I have seen the new G5, but I'm thinking more in terms of portable.
Issue = viruses, vulnerabilities, patches ... and the list goes on
With Mac i would get OSX, Office is available, Photoshop is available. Plus tons of other stuff which hasn't even been ported to Win32 is available for OSX. Which is where the world going, GNU and open market stuff. I need to keep up, that's the reason.

look at it this way, since the 9th series of macos, they are using the ORIGINAL ucla unix (original 1970 coding, at&t codings removed), they are TRYING to merge availability and compatibility of unix flavouring so u get the featuring of m-world, AND power of original-ucla kernel..
compatibility? u can always use emulations, and what not.. and drivers/support is QUITE good if u ask me.. go for it man :k:

You are right about the Kernel power. And ofcourse there’s VPC if I get lonely for a PC.

hmmm, I was thinking the same T-baba. I have decided to buy myself a powerbook aswell. Never owned one but after having used windows platform for more then a decade and lately experimenting with Mac, I have fallen for it. Unfortunately they are incredible expensive overhere :)
Windows software is good aswell, but I have tried mac OS and its way more userfriendly and yes the software I use runs (without crashing) smoothly. (tried it out at classmate's place.)
And then the design, just one word: SEXY!

Search around over there DP. I'm going for a g4 with about 600 mhz machine, memory on these can be upgraded to about a gig. I just started looking so it may not be today that I buy, ya know.
Where are u located? PK? It will be kinda tough there. I think Mac software is available tho.

The exhorbitant high taxes make the prices go shoot up. :D
There are enough apple stores here but I defenately cannot afford a new one at the moment and I am not asking my parents to get me one. But from insiders I received info that the G4 1.33 Ghz with 256 ram will be on discount in september (when classes begin :D ) For 999 Euro.

Wow, that's not a bad price. But I can't wait that long, when I decide I want to get something a few weeks is a long time. But for this i'm not 100%, so ...
PS: I don't have to ask anyone to buy it for me, maybe that's why :)

I dont have to ask either :D Never asked and never will. Normally I buy everything I want/need right away aswell. But I m buying a car first and 2 big things at the same time is too much. And I m still a student yeah :p have to pay for my appartement :D etc.

i really never liked macs always hated them so never going to it as for linux i am getting that on my comp. tofi keep your viao and just get linux on it. As we know mac os is based off of linux and unix so why not just get linux
