maybe you didnt apply the solution well on the hair… i have dyed my hair twice at home and the results were good, with the help of my sister ofcourse, because you dont know what’s happening at the back of your head

The roots being more sensitive always pick up the colour much quicker than the rest of the hair. Thats why the roots turn out lighter when u r using a color lighter than ur own hair. See if u can go to a professional to fix them up.
