How about a nice frame for her future pictures. A fancy scented candle? Engagement is really a more casual occasion. The more formal gifts will come later.

Picture frames, watches, household appliances & dinner sets are very typical desi gifts. Try something different, something new ... like a bailan, so he can smack the crap out of his new significant other. :D

On a more serious note, something personalized through engraving or crochet makes the gift special.
