Illuminating Prayer

Knowing which direction the Qibla is, is always a tricky problem. Does one look at the sun, gaze at the stars, jiggle with a compass, or just plain guess? Well, now there is another way.

Soner Ozenc, a freelance designer based in London, has developed the Sajjadah 1426, a prayer mat but not as you may know it.

Ozenc’s prayer mat lights up the closer to the direction of Makkah it gets. Data from the inbuilt compass module embedded inside the prayer rug is sent to the mat’s light indicators. The closer to the direction of Makkah it is turned, the brighter the pattern’s illumination.

Ozenc, who has a Masters in Industrial Design from Central Saint Martins College, combined traditional and contemporary materials and technology to come up with the design. After exploring a variety of light effect combinations, he settled on electro luminescent printing technology which is a very 21st Centrue technology to help with the ancient art of prayer.

No noooo I don’t use pink when I copy/paste articles . Believe me, the pink color is very much still here. :]
