ik shaqs

bana gulab toh kaante chubha gaya ik shaqs
huwa chiraaggh toh ghar hi jala gaya ik shaqs

tamaan rung mere aur saare khwab mere
fasana the ke fasana bana gaya ik shaqs

muhabbaten bhi ajab uski nafraten bhi kamaal
meri hi tarha ka mujh mei sama gaya ik shaqs

muhabbaton ne kisi ki bhuula rakha tha usse
mile wo zakhm ke phir yaad aa gaya ik shaqs

khula ye raaz ke aaeena khana hae duniya
aur is mei mujh ko tamasha bana gaya ik shaqs

Re: ik shaqs

Said he was a rose and pricked me, that man
Said he was a lamp and burned down my home, that man

All my dreams and feelings were like fiction,
He turned them all into real fiction, that man

His love was strange, so was his hate
He was like me, he got into me, that man

In love I had forgotten all about him
With fresh wounds I recalled him, that man

The secret - world's an illusion - was finally revealed
But he had already made a fool of me, that man

Re: ik shaqs

^ must it be so literal? it lacks emotions your translations. can u not try translating it as a poet rather than just as a random task?

Re: ik shaqs

To put an Urdu ghazal into an English is almost an impossible task while retaining the emotions (as you mentioned). I used the refrain 'that man' , and the rhyme was lost.

It's not a free verse translation.

Could you give me some examples of Urdu ghazals rendered into English ghazals that are to your liking? Your remark, it appears, was not a random remark.
Thanks for stopping by.
