Ihl e Zaban

Watched an interview of Usman Peerzada last week, where he told that his late brother Salman Peerzada was doing a theatre drama based on Urdu’s first drama ‘Raaz o Niyaz’. The drama had only two characters ‘wife and husband’. While they chose Talat Hussain to play the husband, Khalida Riyasat was chosen to play wife just because of her Urdu diction (being Ihl e Zaban), as the script was written in proper Urdu.

This was about 1970s… When Newscasters were taught how to pronounce properly…

Watch today’s TV channels and you will find variety of pronunciation mistakes besides using English / other language words (when there are alternate Urdu words available).

How do you see this trend? Is Urdu dying because there is no wali waris or ihl e zaban among us?

Share the instances for wrong pronunciation from media, as well.

Re: Ihl e Zaban

i remember, some ptv news casters used to say wrong words;

Nazm-o-nasaq instead of nazm-o-nasq

mohkima instead of mahakma

There were people like ubaidullah baig, quraish pur, zia mohiyuddin, hasan shaheed mirza etc but now nobody cares of pronunciation because of wanna be culture. People have no problem if someone fails to say Urdu words properly but if same case happens for English then it becomes a national issue.

Re: Ihl e Zaban

Are you referring to famous lollywood actress?

Re: Ihl e Zaban

^^ no not for that actress because she is a different case :hehe:, the statement is for a general trend.

Baqol Anwar masood (comic poet);

Mard Honi Chahiye, Khatoon Hona Chahiye
Ab Grammer Ka Yehi qanoon Hona Chahiye

Nursery Ka Daakhla Bhi Ab Sarsari Mat Jaaniye
Aap Ke Bacche Ko Aflaatoon Hona Chahiye

Doston English Zaroori Hai Hamare Wastey
Fail Honey Ko Bhi Koi Mazmoon Hona Chahiye

Re: Ihl e Zaban

Speaking of khalida riyasat i noticed she used word Wastay (واسطے)instead of Liye (لیئے)

Re: Ihl e Zaban

I missed that part thanks for sharing, or kia kaha tha khalida riyasat k bary me

Re: Ihl e Zaban

wastey can be used instead of liye, word wastey has various meanings.

Dard-e-dil ke waastey paida kiya insaan ko,
warna taa'at ke liye kuch kam na thay karrubayaan(angels).

Re: Ihl e Zaban

First play with renowned director, rehearsals with Talat Hussain.. established her and she never looked back.

On the face of it, Khalida looked quite Mod and I didn’t know that she was chosen for her first role because of command over language. In old days, Radio and theater were used as language institutes. Ab to Allah hi hafiz hai. This is not just with the Urdu channels… Other channels (like Sindhi channels) are also doing satya naas of their languages

Re: Ihl e Zaban

How do we know when and how to use wastay ? only those can understand who have command over language.
mujhy to dard-e-dil k liye paida kiya insaan ko bhe theek lg raha hy :hmmm:

Re: Ihl e Zaban

ye ihl e zaban jaan sakte hai.. aap mere jaise log nahin :hehe:

True i never used this word and i don’t even know how to use it when an alternative word is available

Re: Ihl e Zaban

lol exactly, many ptv artists had/have excellent command on urdu (except few like marina khan).

wastey: zariey, wasiley, rabt, lagao, sabab, waja, talluq, nisbat, liye etc.

Re: Ihl e Zaban

At that time they had to utter full page dialogue in proper Urdu and during rehearsals pronunciation errors were also tackled

I don’t like it when they say they can’t speak proper urdu when there english is pretty much the same.

(I was reading ur thread)
My mum entered my room n said: " its 11 get up or i will throw cold water on you"
I replied: "Mere sath aap urdu mein guftagu kijiye or raha sawal neend ka to meri tabiyat kuch nasaaz thi isliye aaj uthne mein takheer hogayi"
N she was like :o yeh urdu bolne ka bhoot phir sawar hogaya

So thanks for ur thread :D

Btw urdu isnt my mother tongue but i m madly, deeply etc in love with urdu...

Even zia mohiuddin’s wife don’t speak proper urdu. When they don’t care why would anybody else? All these actors who acted in dramas in 70’s ,80’s and are working now like badar khalil, qazi wajid, shakeel can teach and guide youngsters but they don’t because they don’t have enough time for rehearsels.

Do you think urdu is dying? If yes then what could be the reasons?
