iharm is dhoti like clothing?

many pakistanis make fun of indian dhoti it is poor man’s affordalble
cloth. it has the significance of simplicity.
the meaning of iharam
The distinctive garb of the male pilgrim worn during Umra or Hajj. It consists of two pieces of white, plain and unsewn cloth. One of the pieces (ezaar) is wrapped around the midriff to cover his body from just above his navel to his ankles, and the other (reda) is draped around his shoulders to cover the upper body. For ladies, their ordinary, and unpretentious clothes of daily wear constitute their Ihram.

Rvikz: heh...some ppl just dunno where to draw the line between culture and religion. I'm really not surprised the dhoti was being made fun of by the few.

and now lets quickly see someone posting here that the muslims stole the idea of ehraam from the mallus

the world owes almost everything to the mallu civilization anyway. whats the big deal.

I dont think its something to make fun of.
But I do need to be honest, I would never wear it because it is dangerous.
f.e
- working with heavy machinery, suddenly the end of the dhoty can get stuck in some part and whoosh away goes the dhoti, and perhaps so do u.
- Its often stormy outside, another reason not to wear dhoti.
- playing with kids, the can accidently pull it off
- It can just fall off cuz one didnt tie it up in the propper manner.

Or perhaps its just me, who doesnt know how to tie it up.
But I dont ever make fun of it

ihrams one piece is more like a lungi or sarong than a dhoti as in how itrs worn. the top is basically like a shawl and you wear it with the right shoulder uncovered, although u can drape it over you too. not much different from how sadhoos etc wear stuff in India pr Pakistan.

People who make fun of dhotti could either be voicing personal opinion but in a immature manner, or just use to push ppls buttons. We have all seen ppl flame others by using whatever lil point they can use.

although seriously, as much as I dislike dhotti, it has nothing to do with political or cultural prejudice, i dislike, choori daars, ropers, sombreros, flares etc as well :)

Rvkiz: you dhoti wearing Hindian. Don't you realize that it is the ease of dress, in warm and humid climate that makes this garment so alluring. White Pakistanis don't wear dhotis only colored ones do. Also, if it is worn it will be called something different. Maybe there is an arab word for it.

plenty of Pakistanis wear dhottis, mostly rural, and I suppose some in cities. there are more ppl who wear lungis from what I have seen atleast in Karachi, and significantly more who wear shalwaars kameez.

CH, is dhotti a common sight in India? I have Indian pals who have never worn dhottis in their lives, and these are not only your abcd types, but urban indians who moved to US.

No fraudiya, dhotis are not the norm in India. There are people who wear them. Infact in the south, and rural areas, people wear crisp dhotis on special occasions or for religious services but not as a day to day apparel.

^
Fraudia: don't listen to this non-dhoti wearing, north Indian ABCD. Dhoti is a very common sight in South India

What is Dhoti ?

Is it similar to Lungi ?

no lungi and dhotti are diff things similar, but still diff things. maybe someone can find pics of both.

As far as I knew, they are different names of the same thing (a piece of unstitched cloth one wears to cover the area from waist down). However the method of wearing it differs in different locations. For example, Gujaratis probably wear it in a different way than Punjabis. In some regions it is worn by simply wrapping it around and tieing it on the top, and in some it is wrapped around after it is crossed between the legs, in which case the back of calf and knee remains visible.

This discussion is probably more suited for Culture forum, if we are going to discuss the ways of wearing dhotis or lungis and where it came from. Re: people who criticize dhotis as poor men's clothing... I think Fraudia already gave a good response.

Its true that ahraam (the dress all muslim men wear when performing hajj or umra) has two parts comprising unstitched clothes: a lower part to cover from waist down, and another piece to cover the upper half (this is only for men). During tawwaf, the right shoulder should be kept bare, and the upper cloth can be used to wrap around during other times. It might not be 100% accurate but its the gist of it.

but they are 2 distinct items, otherwise you can include sarongs in it too :)

i mean there are stitched items that have their distinct identity, a kilt and a skirt or a slip aint the same thing :)

just like pajama and shalwaar are not teh same item. similar yes, same..no.

yeah and move it to culture.

Pajama and shalwar are stitched clothing, and depending on how they are stitched, they can be deemed two different things. Just as different than polo-shirt or dress-shirt.

A piece of unstitched cloth is a piece of unstitched cloth. As long as you are wearing it around your waist, you can call it dhoti or lungi or wrap or sarong or whatever takes your fancy. Its the style of wearing it which is different and varies from region to region.

I may be wrong though... pics may be useful to elaborate whats the difference between dhoti and lungi, if any.

yaaar unstitched toh loincloth be hay, but not quite a dhotti or lungi now is it.
