another way of thinking about it is that a true friend wouldnt hurt you.

yeah a true friend wont hurt intentionally, but even done unintentionally, it can hurt pretty bad.
And maybe he is not true friend of yours but you are his true friend. And you consider him truthfull to you aswell.
