I’m in the US and I know loads of ladies and men who make fresh roti everyday. Some are working and some are not.
I thought I am the only poor sod who never made roti, until reading this thread.
I tried making roti 20+ years ago, hated the mess, and the ritual of making roti. So I stopped. Hubby loves, loves roti; he hates rice. Children love roti, paratha etc. It did not help when Nani would spoil them all rotten on her visits with homemade taaza roti and paratha. If my in laws wanted roti, MIL made it herself.
Over the years, it really bothered me that i did not make roti for my family. I’ve spent $$$$$ on store brought Deep naans, frozen kulchas etc over the years.
Just 3 months ago, my Ami visited me and made roti, paratha etc for the children for 6 weeks straight. That’s Nani love for sure.
Call it what you want, but it tore me up, seeing my family enjoying roti. My son came to me, and said I would love it if you can make us roti whenever, we love homemade food, and having roti is the icing on the cake. AND..my Ami gave me such an earful about it . Soooo, for the past 3 months I have been making roti and paratha. Mind you, sometimes they are lopsided, harder than normal, slightly burnt..other days they are just perfect.
Does that make me subserviant? I dunno. Did I finally after 20+ years cave in? I dunno .
I do know that the look on my childrens face and the way they enjoy roti with pure enjoyment, for me NOW it is priceless.
My DD or hubby knead the dough. I will make the roti, and one of the children or hubby will clean up the counter top and the stove. It is messy, but that is the only way i can make it without feeling too pressured.
Also..because dear hubby is so awesome, he never makes remarks about the roti being ‘bad’ on occasion and neither do the children, I will complain that it’s not ‘perfect’, but if my #1 fans do not have an issue, why should !?
