If your child was ...

… anorexic.

How would you deal with him/her? I’m not talking about therapists/doctors/treatments… as a parent, how would you handle this child?

I saw a documentary on BBC a few years ago .. something like “Our Daughter won’t eat”. The anorexic kid was quite disgusting looking to be honest. I wouldn’t be surprised if she was bullied at school because of her skeletal appearance… adding to the already major problem.

It didn’t really have a major impact on me back then. But recently when I heard about Brittany Murphy’s death, I was quite shocked. She had the body of a 10 year old at the age of 32. For flip sake!!

(Apparently, her husband, Simon Monjack is now suing Warner Bros for her death!)

When I looked up on the internet, I found out Brittany wasn’t the first celebrity to have died due to malnutrition. There have been many cases of models, actresses dying due to anorexia-related issues.

This could relate back to the “Books and Magazines” thread. If this is the kind of environment our kids are going to be growing up in, its very likely that one of them will have a tragic end.

How would you make sure your child doesn’t end up in a situation like this?

And if your child does become anorexic, how would you bring him/her out of the
situation before its too late?

Re: If your child was ...

Fasting is the way to abolish eating disorders.

Re: If your child was ...

Part of the reason these eating disorders develop is that the child is looking for a way to control and define her identity. She becomes known as "the thin one," and even if it's not seen as positive, it's her thing. She needs help finding something else to define her. But it needs to be on her terms -- something she can control. That's not easy.
