I had taken many fine arts classes in school and I would lose myself completely in them, so originally that’s what I wanted to teach as I had a knack for it as well. But I changed my mind for personal reasons. I used to teach intensive reading at the middle school level and the students in those classes tend to be an emotionally trying bunch due to troubled home lives. But once you develop a rapport with them, it can be fun to delve into novel studies with them and to get them to connect the novel to their own lives as you analyze characters, events, themes, and quotes, etc. I have wondered what it would be like to teaching language arts at the secondary level (high school, etc) where the students are more mature, more capable of divergent thinking, and would also (hopefully) have their basic writing skills in place. For right now, it’s math. And I like like objectivity of math; it’s easier to grade because there is only one answer and you either have it or you don’t.
Since you brought up the topic, what would you teach?
This thread seems in time as today was the first day of school here. The school bus has the stop right by my driveway so when I was getting in the car this morning, a dozen young half-sleepy kids with long faces and dropped shoulders were waiting for the bus lol. I wanted to say good morning to them but then realized, it doesnt look a very good day for them LOL
