i came across many khans who usually belong to punjab or karachi but do not know pashto
if your name ends with khan then do u know why u have this surname , what is your family background, a pathan or else.
Re: If you are using Khan surname then r u a pathan
Khan is not of Pashtun origin and it is not a family surname, it is of Mongolian origin and it is a title that means chieftain or leader.
Nowadays it is used throughout Asia by lots of different peoples including Mongols, Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims, Turks, Hindkos, Arabs, Pashtuns, Persians, Desis, Urdus and the list goes on so no one has monopoly over it.
Re: If you are using Khan surname then r u a pathan
Please don't use the word Pathan because it is a foreign mispronunciation of Pashtun, and at times it is used as a unnecessary blanket term for any ethnicity from west of the river Indus which just confuses people.
It is better to avoid other spellings/pronunciations/dialects such as Pukhtun, Pukhtoon or Pakhtoon and stick to Pashto and Pashtun because it just confuses people into thinking they are different ethnic groups, and people who are not accustomed to the "kh" sound will think it is a hybrid between Paki and Cartoon.
It's not a good idea to use Afghan neither because Afghan now means a national of Afghanistan and is not synonymous to Pashtun anymore, there are too many Dari speakers in Afghanistan (and growing as the Pashtuns there prfer Dari) and they're not going to part with Afghanistan and Afghanistan is not going to part with them, and besides these days calling oneself Afghan is not exactly glamorous is it?
We can still lay claim to the same heritage but refer to it as Pashtun instead of Afghan, and please don't quote sentimental poets of old to me because their words are not infallible or timeless and there is a difference between reality and romanticism.
Re: If you are using Khan surname then r u a pathan
I don't speak Pushtu, neither my parents did. Only my grandfather could speak Pushtu. Our forefathers belong to Yousuf Zai tribe, came from Khyber Agency some 200 years ago. The spent most of the times in Pashtun communities in Western UP and Rajistan. Most of my extended family has fair skin and brown hair even few of them have green/blue eyes as well. Some like myself are brown, due to marriages with locals in those area, but one can tell my background by eyes. For example my dadi was a local from Syed family, my dada a yousuf zai married her. So its not neccessary if you lived your whole life in Karachi and can't speak Pashtu, you are a banaspati pashtun.
Plus, the most important thing is why we are pashtun, panjabi, bengali or dravidians? Only so we can be recognized among as. This is what Quran says, and a true pashtun will prefer that on any ethnicity.
Re: If you are using Khan surname then r u a pathan
...my last name is Khan and that's all i wish to add.
Re: If you are using Khan surname then r u a pathan
why must people define themselves by their last name?
yeh it is your identity, but then you say oh so and so is khan he is pukhtun
so and so is mughal he from here amd mirza is also mughal and all these things, it just confuses pple.
you last name is you identity in a world where many others will have the same first name as you.
