My gut feel is that Pakistan would be the net loser in this scenario, as it will no longer have the shortest route to and from Afghanistan. If the niceties between Iran & the US speed up more rapidly, then India’s clout in the region gets a big boost. What are your thoughts on this possibility?

Any such move would sideline Saudi regime as well, I'd say US should enhance their relationship with Iran.

Its way too early to speculate on this, alot can go wrong yet. There are plenty of exremists out there who do not want peace be they hard line Iranis or Americans. I'm sure Saudi will want to see this peace initiative disrupted as they would want to turn Iran into Iraq.

^ There is no marriage between USA and Saudi ... they have extra-marital relationship (Suhbat-e-Gunah). Saudi Arabia is American's Dashta (girl-friend) who entertains America with all what she has (body, material wealth, and soul) and in return America gives her (Saudi Arabia) feeling of security and protection.

I am hoping that things work out fine between Iran & the US. A major shift in Iran's policy this year was not denying the Holocaust, which means should Iran give up its quest for Nuclear weapons, it may also normalise its relations with Israel and India can help patch things up here. If Iran can trade its oil freely, oil prices will go down and India will also have unfettered access to Afghanistan and Central Asia through Charbahar bypassing Pakistan entirely. Another positive wildcard is NaMo taking over India in 2014. NaMo has excellent relations with China and believes in a Look East philosophy, if he able to find some solution to India's territorial feud with China, relations between India and China will become more meaningful and the high volume of bilateral trade will ensure any hostilities between China and India are out of the question, if a couple more border posts on the Indo-China border are opened for trade, China's shipping lanes from the Middle East could be drastically cut, by shipping China's imports / exports through Indian ports on the west coast / Gujarat. India already has the necessary road and rail infrastructure and a stable and safe environment to transit Chinese goods from the Middle East and Africa to Western China through India. A win - win scenario for all of the countries in this region, unfortunately not very much for Saudi & Pakistan.

Diplomatic relations would have been restored between USA and Iran as the groundwork was laid in the 1990's with Bill Clinton and Rasfanjani calling for a thaw.
Unfortunately both elected idiots as Presidents with USA with George W. Bush and Iran with Ahmedinijad.
It both keep electing moderates, it will take another 10 years before any normalcy will come.

Muhammad khatami under his rule helped the US in afghanistan mission they co-opperated fully on intelligence and military maneuvers.
On iraq the Iranian regime ordered sistani, al hakim, Muqtada al-Sadr groups to stop destroying the Americans on battlfields of iraq without this the Yanks would have been crushed.
The US plays israel against iran to contain it and it plays israel to contain iran this is called the chess game of politics.
the 3rd player the US uses against the other 2 is saudi arabia.

No one else but that must worry Sheikhs of Arabs, if the relation between USA Iran start get normal who will be the next villan? USA Iran normal relations might be a night mare for both Israel and KSA.

But ice start melting and what I guess Iran surrender to USA coz Arab springs upsets!! 2nd thing is that Arabs producing more hard core extermists compare to Iranaians! Iran causing not much problems to USA interests in region and he got what he was targeting the Necular things and it's might be pull one step back for USA to not put Iran on a stage of war which is surely not good for baby Israel.

Israel will find this a difficult pill to swallow but will have to come to terms with this nonetheless as popular opinion in the EU, US, Russia, China, India and much of the world wants normalization of ties between Washington & Tehran, and should Iran give up their quest for nuclear weapons and accepts Israel's right to exist, I don't see a problem with Israel even normalizing its ties with Iran. A game changer this development will be for sure.

Another thing is that Iranians outside of Iran tend to look and dress very western, this makes them far more acceptable to the average European / American / Russian than Arabs, and appearances do matter!

Arabs and Pakistanis also wear western dress. Suit and tie, pants and shirts, skirts and blouse outside their countries and even in their countries. Didn't you see NS, Saddam hussain, Mian Qusoori, Assad etc. ever wearing ties and suits?:D
